Listening to the marriage amendment debate is driving me nuts
Any of y'all out there who are married and don't have kids...you aren't really married apparently. Marriage is expressly for procreation don'tcha know. :eyes:

1. My favorite is when they make appeals to the Bible
As saying that marriage should be between a man and a woman. Yet the completely gloss over the fact that God didn't mind biblical men having multiple wives and sex slaves.

4. Nor do they...God_Bush_n_Cheney posted the link to a documentary
a while back about male teen sex slaves coming out of Omaha that led to a trail straight to the White House.

16. McDermott told the House what the Bible says
Mr. McDERMOTT . Mr. Speaker, the President's presidential prayer team
is urging us to ``pray for the President as he seeks wisdom on how to
legally codify the definition of marriage. Pray that it will be
according to Biblical principles.''

With that in mind, I thought I would remind the body of the biblical
principles they are talking about.

Marriage shall consist of a union between one man and one or more
women . That is from Genesis 29:17-28.

Secondly, marriage shall not impede a man's right to take concubines
in addition to his wife or wives . That is II Samuel 5:13 and II
Chronicles 11:21.

A marriage shall be considered valid only if the wife is a virgin .
If the wife is not a virgin, she shall be executed . That is
Deuteronomy 22:13.

Marriage of a believer and a nonbeliever shall be forbidden . That is
Genesis 24:3.

Finally, it says that since there is no law that can change things,
divorce is not possible, and finally, if a married man dies, his
brother has to marry his sister-in-law. Gen. 38:6-10; Deut 25:5-10

3. That's why I'm not watching it
This whole thing is such a sorry waste of time.

Our government thinks that it is SO important to debate the relative merits of a proposed constitutional amendment that A. will never be approved by enough states and B. would put into law discrimination against a minority!

Yet, they think that abuse of intelligence to provide a false reasoning to send our young men and women to die in a foreign country is no big deal!

I just don't get it.

6. Do not underestimate the forces behind this amendment.
They are funded 10X over HRC/ACLU/PFAW and have identified it as the line in the sand.

I believe it must be stopped in the Senate. Now. If it goes to the states, you will see a wave of hate ads the likes of which you have never seen before.

7. You're probably right...
I sometimes underestimate the narrow-mindedness and smallness of people. It gets me in trouble a lot.

I forget how people in the grip of religious fervor or fear of "the other" tend to strike out and move toward whatever they see as a safe port.

I just don't understand why people fear homosexuals so much. I am a straight woman and have never really cared who someone loves.

OK, I admit that once I was disappointed that a REALLY, really cute man I knew was gay, but that was because I wanted him for myself!

I will never understand why people can't just let other people live their lives.

Rambling. Will stop now.

Edited on Fri Jul-09-04 12:03 PM by VelmaD
I'm really tired of hearing how marriage is central or vital or whatever to our culture. Goddammit I'm not married adn I'm tired of the implication that I am somehow a lesser citizen because I'm not. *grrrrrrrr*

And I just heard a FLAT OUT lie. Some idiot just said that both partners do better in a marriage. That's flat out bullshit shit. Plenty of studies have shown that women have better mental health when single.

14. So true...
I heard earlier this morning one of those idiots saying that so many single people are hoping to get married because they see how much benefit to their lives marriage would be.

:puke:

I'm perfectly happy being single with no kids.

11. Explain what?
People like Frist, Santorum, and Sessions, and DeLay in the House, are Theocratic Fascists. You can't explain anything to them. Nor the people that would actually vote for them.

15. exactly
Their whole "activist judges" bullshit makes zero sense. The court is there to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority.

And all of these state amendments going on the ballot now and I keep reading: let the people vite on it!! What? Since when have we let the people vote on equal rights for a minority group? The majority deciding if the minority deserves equal rights? No thank you.

18. They make me sick
I agree with with Randi Rhodes on this one. Get rid of the whole institution of marriage, have people sign some legal form designating someone else as your legal closest person for purposes of medical decisions and so forth and everybody love who they want and everyone else mind their own damn business about it.
