Senate to Debate Marriage Amendment

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Senate wades into an election-year debate Friday over whether to write into the Constitution that "marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman."

Its strongest proponents say a constitutional amendment is the only way to prevent federal courts from hearing cases that challenge a federal law disallowing same-sex unions. With such an amendment, they say, a court wouldn't be able to rule that gay marriage is legal.

"Some would define this as the ultimate culture battle," said Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kansas.

Many Democrats say the debate is a political diversion orchestrated for the weeks running up to the presidential nominating conventions.

1. Call it a hunch
But if this gets to a vote on the floor of the senate before the election, Kerry will not be present that day. After the election, this probably won't even get to the floor since its an election year ploy.

3. Well, Kerry hasn't been there for a lot of the votes since he is needing
...to focus on campaigning, something I have no issue with, and if the Repukes try to make light of his absence, well then they have only to blame themselves since when he has bothered to show up for very important votes, they do stall tactics so he doesn't get his time to speak and vote.

Kerry has been clear on his position - he is personally opposed to Gsy marriage, but supports civil unions and legal rights to Gays in a civil union. He also is opposed to any constitutional amendment on this matter (of any kind that discriminates and takes away rights from a group of citizens ever.

I am so mad...this is political bs and frankly the Republicans leading this "call to debate" are un-american and should be ashamed.

2. Don't they have more important things to be debating and taking care of?
THIS MAKES ME SO MAD!

Who cares if two people who love one another want to make that commitment! This should be a state decision and not a constitutional amendment and I'm disgusted that our taxpayer money is being wasted to even have this politically divisive issue debated when there are so many other important issues that need to be attended to before the Congress goes into Recess...

Those sh*ts - the Repukes - they are wasting time and trying to make this a political debate against the Dems in a time of War and election....

If they are so concerned about the sancity of "Marriage", debate Divorce and the issues in our society that lead to divorce, not whether Susi and Mary or John and Ted need to be prevented from Marrying and be discriminated in our Constitution.

SHAME, SHAME, SHAME....
