"Values of the Heartland" ?????
Would someone please enlighten me as to exactly what they are? The media is constantly refering to them. Minneapolis here...that's the Heartland isn't it? Or are we just the Great White North? Also gay as can be and an agnostic....um, are they talking about my values or what?

1. Kansas here and I have always
wondered the same thing. A pretty broad brush I think.

2. I agree
I'd love to hear someone refer to them that I could ask what they're talking about. When the Repukes say it I can see them snickering and thinking that phrase is synonymus with stupid...

6. I live in the armpit of the "Heartland" and I have yet to find out what
is meant by values. All I can see all around me are petty, short-sighted, mean-spirited little people who have one of two outlooks on life. The first one I call the 'farmer mentality'. It goes "Life isn't meant to be easy so suck it up, if you can't make it on your own, than tough." The second is the "I have mine, so screw you" mentality. The average citizen has absolutely no political conscience whatsoever. I can't explain why, I can only guess that they're just too damn backward to think a simple concept from point A to point B.

I hate it here, always have. I was born here but lived in Cheyenne, Wyoming when I was little (loved it at the time) and Anchorage, Alaska in the 70s. I would absolutely love to go back there, but it is not practical or possible.

Government of, by,and for the people, ALL THE PEOPLE, is a concept that will never take root here.

3. Illinois, here, in the middle of farming country.
I don't get it either.

I have gay people and Christians, agnostics and Wiccans in my family.

I even have some divorced people, as do just about all my neighbors.

What exactly are our heartland values?

7. Isn't that phrase semi new like "Homeland"?
I freaked out the first time I heard that. A choir I was in sang "Heimat" a German choral piece by Brahms. As I recall there was some sensitivity about it due the Nazi party was particularly fond of it. Honestly before 9/11 I never heard it used in the states.

4. I don't know what it is either -m
If I had to guess, I'd guess that it means "Christian" values. But I'm not Christian so I'm not part of the intended audience. However, I think he figures "Christian values" are: prayer in schools, anti same-sex marriage, anti abortion, etc. . .
