My Green Honda Civic and I did get into pissing match with a Hummer on the Dallas North Tollway, and then onto the Bush Tollway awhile back, because I dared to honk when the Hummer dangerously cut right in front of me. Granted I laid on the horn a little longer than normal to simply honor the extravagance of the vehicle. I managed to pass him shortly after, and then Mr. Small Penis had his ego wounded, and he followed my exit on the Bush Tollway from the North Tollway and passed me, cut me off and started speeding up and slowing down and slamming on his brakes and this and that until I managed to pass him again. Fortunately we got to the toll lanes and the stupid idiot didn't have a toll tag so he had to wait while I breezed through the tolltag lane, thus my Civic leaving his Hummer to eat my DUST!

He never did catch up to me... I laughed all the way home.

Look up the word abomination in the Dictionary and there is a picture of a Hummer.

Just like the bower bird acquires flashy little bits of rubbish with which to pretty up its bower and thus increase its social status and attract a mate, so do does the hummer driver look to pump up his social status. When he/she drives a Hummer, he/she is saying "Look, I am better than you. I am higher in the hierarchy than you."

A recent business magazine wrote of the different approaches to social hierarchy climbing using flashy cares when it comes to Europe vs America. In Europe, apparently, if you leave your Ferrari/Hummer/whatever on the street, you come back to find it scratched up with a nasty note attached saying, " Who do you think you are?". Of course in America, that would not happen, the magazine explained. Well, I think that European attitude is a very healthy one, and one that separates us from the animals. The animals are the ones that find flashy geegaws sufficient to demonstrate the value of a person. I think we humans can do a little better than that.

I say, "Reject social hierarchy!"

36. I've got mixed feelings about this.

I feel disgust when I drive by Hummers. But I'm a single man of 50, and I don't have kids. I only rode a bike for many years. I have used fewer btu's than most people one third my age. Isn't that what this is all about? Energy usage? Or is it aggressive behavior? I have accidentally made myself a small wealth in my life. I recently bought myself a couple of used Porsches. And I fear that might make me a target. Although my motives were very different from those who typically own Hummers. Just a thought.
I'd like to add something- energy useage comes in all forms. If energy use is what we are talking about here, then one has to sum up the total energy used, in order to determine the level of guilt. One might be surprised at the energy usage.
