Does this tell you anything about "why they hate us?" |
|
<snip>
"The International Court of Justice has ruled that Israel's separation barrier in the West Bank violates international law and called on Israel to tear it down and compensate Palestinian owners of property confiscated for its construction. The American judge was the court's sole opponent of the decision."

1. And of course, Israel dismissed the ruling immediately. |

2. Well, that was a no-brainer. Very predictable. |

This is such a divisive issue, hard to think how it will ever be resolved in any sane manner.

Look, Israel is not a monolithic entity. As it happens, the ruling of Israel's own High Court of Justice that the fence could not legally stray from the Green Liner is almost as strong a condemnation of Sharon's policies as this ruling. And Sharon intends to follow the ruling of his country's court. Some in his party, Likud, want to ignore it, and some want to just take over the West Bank entirely, but they are a tiny minority. It makes no more sense for us to judge the entire nation of Israel by the actions of a few of its government than it does to judge all Americans by the actions of Bush.
It is true that the Right Wing in this country supports Israel unconditionally, for their own, sick reasons. But, speaking as a Jew, I can tell you their help is not welcome by most Israelis. Pressure is increasing on Sharon to withdraw the settlements from Gaza and the West Bank, and to withdraw all armed forces from the territories as well. The prevailing attitude in Israel, if reading their main newspapers is any judge, is that the Palestinians deserve a home of their own, and that Israel and the Palestinians must coexist peacefully. It is not an "apartheid" state, or a genocidal one. Stating otherwise is simply doing a disservice to our cause in general; our cause, after all, is truth.

5. I think it's a given that most Israeli's.......... |
|
..don't support Likud's more repressive measures.
The point is that most Arabs.....and much of the rest of the World.......has a perception that Israel (with the full support of the US) is hell bent on destroying any chance of a viable Palestinian state.
Down here we get to see Dubai and Indonesian TV (both very moderate) showing attacks by IDF against Palestinians almost daily. Those images combined with the daily reports from Iraq, showing graphic images of Iraqi casualties (and heavily armed US soldiers looking on) only serve to re-inforce the perception of US/Israeli hostility to the Muslim world.
Unfortunately the views of moderate Israeli's aren't newsworthy.
