The reporter was given the info by Tom Connolly, a Maine lawyer and Democratic Party activist who had run for governor. Connolly said he got the info from a Maine Democratic official who he didn't name. Here's the CNN story. http://www.cnn.com/2000/ALLPOLITICS/stories/11/03/bush.dui/ |

Connolly heard the rumor and contacted the reporter, who then did the legwork to prove it. Connolly claimed to have heard about the story the day before, so it wasn't being held as an "October Surprise" by the Democratic Party.
