Took 33 people to see F911 on Friday |
|
Adults & high schoolers. The results-- all who planned to vote Rep changed their minds--especially gratifying were the changes in our most recent immigrant population (this was a neighborhood thing)from Togo, Sudan & Nigeria, as most families are new and got a lot of Rep PR during the immigration processing. The second result was that all high school students now have letters to circumvent the reporting of their info under No Child Left Behind to the Selective Service (that was a spontaneous outcome, we hadn't thought of it before going). Anyway, it was wonderful...the discussion afterwards lasted hours and I found it so satisfying!
peace.

That's amazing! If everyone of us just got ONE person to register to vote, or to change their minds, what a difference it would make.

6. Way to Go--and welcome to DU! |
|
This is the first time I've seen one of your posts. I'm another "old lady", trying desperately to make a difference in this country I love, and give my grandchildren some semblance of hope for the future. It won't be long until they're of draft age (I know it will happen if Dubya "wins" this one), and unlike when I turned 18, girls will now be drafted, too. We must not let this happen!! You are an inspiration. Keep up the good work, and peace to you!

7. My uncle took his son and ALL of his friends, all of whom will be voting |

for the first time this year. He has "indoctrinated" them to the ways of the Bush administration and this film served to back up everything he had told them. (My cousin is an only child so his friends hang out at my uncle's house regularly.) He probably took 12-15 eighteen year olds and I thought *that* was impressive! Kudos to you for taking 33! You should get an award! :)
It is imperative that first time voters see this film. They need to know what the government is doing in their name!
Edited to add: Welcome to DU! :hi:

I need to circumvent any reporting to the Selective Service (or the military recruiting apparatus of any kind) of my son, ASAP.

have their full records (grades, address, phone, class selection, test scores, etc.) forwarded to the Selective Service UNLESS the parent or guardian sends a letter to the school requesting that the information be withheld. It is sent in October, so send the letter the first day of school. This is part of the NCLB legislation. It doesn't register a student with the Selective Service, you still have to do that legally, if you are male, when you are 18 (old law), but it does put your child on targeted recruiter lists. My daughter was a senior when the NCLB passed and her info. was sent before we knew; she gets 2-3 mailings a week, specifically targeted to her career aspirations-- based on her accelerated math and foreign language classes.
peace.

I've had to take a few cab rides recently, and in my town the dirvers are almost all from the Sudan. I'm puzzled at their support for Bush.

I don't mean to imply a coordinated effort, although I also wouldn't be surprised, I only have the information given to me by the individuals I've spoken to. I live/work in a HUD housing community. Our greatest immigrant growth the past two years has been from Africa; specifically: Nigeria (wealthy there, poor here), Gambia (urban poor), Sudan (rural Christian refugees from the south), Togo (immigration lottery winners and those they can now fund to come over for post-secondary education) and Egypt(Christian refugees). All except three of the families from Togo, Nigeria & Gambia spent time in refugee camps, from 1 to 3 years, where they were housed with other persecuted Christians and fed/clothed/educated by Christians. They were comforted and reassured that they were going to the US which was currently governed by it's first openly Christian president. (I've had some teens ask me about our previous Muslim or pagan presidents...ummm, huh?)I'm no expert, but I think that the experience of immigration is so personal to one's own life, that just like embedded reporters, there's an automatic loyalty and debt of gratitude for whomever is in office when one arrives. My friend from Togo (who changed his mind after F911) counted it as generosity that Bush was running for re-election-- this appears to him as proof of Bush's inherent sense of fair play, since the leader of his country has been in power for 38 or 36 years (I forget) after cancelling any further elections after he came to power. Also, coming from countries with CIA involvement and US supported dictatorships, they don't get much free press international news prior to arrival in the camps. The ending of F911 had a big impact-- the obvious division of power/wealth/class worldwide came out in very moving personal stories from new citizens and our native born kids, too.
Probably someone will know more than I about the issue. I'm just listening and drawing a feeling conclusion.
peace.
