I did the impossible I got my hardcore republican father to agree to
vote for Kerry!

It has taken months of giving him bits, showing facts ect, to a guy who gets all his news from NRA magazines and freeper co-workers.

The only reason he's a repub is because he belive(d) the Democrats are only out to destroy the military, take more taxes, ect, you know all the Rush talking points.

My dad's never been a social conservative (he's pro-choice) on gay marriage he says "hell yea it should be legal! why should only straight people suffer?" so at least he supports that albeit in a strange humorous way :)

But after showing him basically that if he truly wants to support the military, if he wants to see the REAL terrorists dead, he better not be bothering with the repugs cause they're essentially too busy protecting them.

Only a week ago he was callimg Micheal Moore "an asshole who should be shot" because of some freeper at his office telling everyone that Moore hates America cause of this movie ect.

Having seen the movie, I gave him a quick summary of it, and he said "oh...well that's not so bad" basically I hammered the point home that the real reason repugs don't want you to see this movie is because it decimates their reputation as being the pro-military, pro-American party. It shows their goldenboy cozying up with the enemy.

Now he tells me he just stays quiet while his freeper co-workers goes on about Moore, and when it comes out on DVD he wants to see it.

So it's been a rollercoaster, but after showing many snippets of Kerry's platform and record and refuting all the "flip flops" my father has now said:

"Well I hope he wins now"

So now when my stepmother (whom I strongly suspect is going to vote for Kerry, she told me so in so many words) my real mother (who told me if I drive her she'll vote heh) my cousin who has never voted before, and of course my converted father..

That's 4 votes towards Kerry in Arizona (swingstate alert) 3 of which would've normally gone Republican.

1. Good job!
That's great that you've stolen your dad back from the GOP. I wish that I could say the same -- however, my task IS the impossible -- he's economically AND socially reeled-in by The Dark Side, a full-on devotee of not true conservatism, but the GOP Civil Church of Mammon and the Blonde Jesus.

I'm still trying...

2. "and when it comes out on DVD he wants to see it."
I think he is not the only republican who feels this way. I think the DVD will have a huge impact just as the movie has.

3. I think so too
My father belongs to that crowd that despises movie theaters and prefers to see movies when they come out on dvd or video.

9. Lots of older men feel that way, but perhaps you could get him to

a Saturday matinee at a more obsure theater. I know in Denver, F911 is playing at two art house type theaters--both which have 11 am matinees that have been less crowded and with much more of an older crowd (on average). He might well feel more comfortable going with you then?

4. Dude, your father was never hardcore.
You've never met my dad. His mind is completely closed on the issue of the administration to the point that we never talk anymore. Gay marriage? Forget about it. He wants to visit w/ my kids but it's too hard to avoid the topic of politics. He was a Nixon man at the time, a career Bechtel oilmanand and contemporary of George Schultz. He's never admitted that Nixon was a criminal and always felt that the dems were unfair to the repubs after Watergate.

You may think I'm being unfair, but I've drawn a line. No repubs in my house until this admin is out on it's ass. Life is difficult enough as it is without my volitionally allowing poison into my space.

5. Well not hardcore socially
I didn't want to say this because of the personal insult that might be hurled at my dad, but as I said socially he's not a conservative on the gay marriage/abortion set, BUT he has this habit of pointing out people who look like drug users and saying they should be killed, and he has said in the past that someone like Hitler should come back to set things right because liberals have made us feeble and that's why terrorists attacked us.

That was my starting point and I've molded him into a human being now.
That hardcore for ya? :)
