1. You are 100% RIGHT. That is all we were told after 9/11, right? . . .
If we let the terrorist dictate to us when our elections are held, then they have won.

We should go about our daily lives (like we are told) and do our jobs (like we were told) and (back in 9/11/01), really get out there and spend some moolah.

Because why . . . If we didn't the terrorists win and we cannot have that.

GREAT POST Class Warrior. I have nominated you for front page.

2. A good one
but I see a opportunity to seal georges fate with this delay bullshit.
Instead of delaying voting, let's open polls for two weeks beginning Nov. 2. It will screw the terrorists plan and give the true majority a chance to vote.

6. It's a good response
to "A vote for Kerry is a vote for the terrorists" meme that the RW is beginning to chant.

If Bush is ahead going into election day, the elections won't be cancelled. IF Kerry is ahead then I predict there will be some "information" that will lead to a push to postpone the elections until Bush get back on top.

12. "We can not have free government without elections"--Abraham Lincoln, 1864
"We can not have free government without elections; and if the rebellion could force us to forego, or postpone a national election it might fairly claim to have already conquered and ruined us."

(To shamelessly steal a quote from my own thread)

Here's the document the quote came from:

I think it's especially interesting that Lincoln was utterly certain he was going to lose the election.

KICK!

And YES - ram it down their throats. Spread it everywhere. I like the sticker-making site a LOT!

Repetition, people!

Repetition to your friends.

Repetition to your media.

Repetition while in line at the check-out counter.

Repetition EVERYWHERE, AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE!

Drive it home!

If it actually does happen, AND WE HAVE REPEATED THIS ENOUGH, AND SPREAD IT AS FAR AS POSSIBLE, the seeds will already have been planted in the backs of people's minds - that this is fishy and bogus and stinks to high heaven.

ENCOURAGE SUSPICION. REPEAT THIS AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE.

DEFANG THE SERPENT BEFORE IT CAN STRIKE!!

28. Yup
It keeps getting floated and in an oh-so-reasonable manner. There's no excuse for cancelling or even POSTPONING elections. This is fear-mongering dressed up as reasonable arguments and I don't care whether nervous nellies think that we are overreacting... sometimes this kind of overreaction is what is necessary to get people's attention. The idea that we would allow elections to be postponed or cancelled for anything other than something like a massive country-wide nuclear attack is VERY, VERY dangerous and it needs to be stomped into the ground HARD NOW!
NO ELECTIONS = TERRORISTS HAVE WON

30. If they cancel the election,
it's time to start thinking secession before they consolidate their power. Some bring up the subject of the last Civil War and how it ended, but this time with most of the military overseas in the Hell that is Iraq, there isn't much left here to fight us with. Our leaders should think about this, if the Constitution is suspended this way, because this is no longer the America of our founding fathers.

32. My preference goes like this--
"If the elections are cancelled or delayed, the FASCISTS win."

This is their plan, after all. Frankly, the 'terrorists' are plenty happy with our current government. The Bush Administration and his Repug allies are doing halcyon work in helping the various terrorist organizations recruit new members.

The last thing these people want is a Kerry administration.

Or even a sane Republican party alternative. (If such a thing could possibly exist anymore.)

33. That's why the terrorists win.
If the elections are cancelled, Bush stays in office. The terrorists win.

Plus, this is all about using the language to help people understand. "Terrorist" is much more tangible to the average Joe than "Fascist."

39. It means more than that...
It means that Bush is full of shit when he sez invading Iraq made America and the world 'more secure' illustr\ating that the war on Iraq was uneccessary and a hideous waste of lives, money and reputation

It means that Homeland Security is a boondoggle and that Bush IS NOT a 'War' President, but an incompetant dolt when it comes to the 'war on terra'..

It DOES mean the terrorists win.

It also seems to me that Bush and the boys are on their hands and knees begging for a strike (MIHOP, LIHOP) as they have just telegraphed to OBL how to completely fuck-up the US way of democracy.

The Democrats need to start the talking point - 'our democracy is so strong that we will have elections IN SPITE of a terrorist attack'. Say it often, say it loud!

It worries me that this GOP idea has become a rapidly spreading trial balloon floated through the media and that the Dems, have been to this point, rather spineless on their assault on the WH.

43. Agreed, but this is simply a meme.
A short-hand phrase chosen for maximum impact. Use it with your friends, the news media, your congresspeople.

If the media and the Dems have been too spineless, then WE need to get out there front and center with catchy phrases and carefully chosen language AND CHANGE THE DISCOURSE.

It's up to us.

41. My letter (repost); use as template if you wish
repost from earlier thread:

Dear Senator ,

I am greatly disturbed by recent reports of discussions on postponing the presidential election in the wake of a terrorist attack. For example, a CNN headline read “Officials discuss how to delay Election Day”, (CNN’s website, July 11, 2004, 10:42 PM EDT).

Elections were held in 1862 and 1864 – during the American Civil War. Elections were held during the First and Second World Wars. Elections were held during the Great Depression. Why should they not be held after a terrorist attack?

It may be reasonable to delay elections in a local area affected by a terrorist attack, but there is no justification for delaying the elections nationwide. Such a public discussion is merely an invitation for terrorists to tamper with our electoral process.

Furthermore, I question the impartiality of DeForest Soaries Jr., chairman of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (an agency set up by the Bush administration). Soaries, a Baptist minister and Bush appointee, is as partisan an official as there ever could be. In the event of a terrorist attack and postponed election, how can the public be assured that the electoral process would not be manipulated in such a way as to be advantageous to the incumbent?

Please fight against this dangerous idea in Congress. Tell your colleagues that postponing the election is inimical to the democratic process and unacceptable to Americans. If, in succumbing to paranoia, we abandon the foundations of democracy, then terrorists have indeed won.

Sincerely,
xocolatl

42. If the elections are POSTPONED, the terrorists win.

Say that, too!!!

If there was a terrorist attack in the US, elections could be postponed IN THAT CITY OR AREA ONLY while the rest of us voted as usual. If necessary, they might postpone calling the election nationally until that area voted. (Of course, with the Kerry landslide, there would be no need!)
