WHY IN THE WORLD SHOULD/WOULD "GOD BLESS AMERICA?" |
|
Edited on Sun Jul-11-04 07:53 PM by Cyrano
Our forbear's murdered native Americans and Mexicans (among others), to steal a continent.
We had a civil war over whether one human being should own another. The winning side didn't do much to ensure freedom for those they freed. Oh, yeah, the 1960's came along and (inadvertently)granted overwhelming and enduring political power to the former slave owners.
Vietnam happened and 59,000 Americans (and who knows how many Vietnamese) died for...what?
And right now, Americans and Iraqis are dying for...excuse me, I forgot why.
And then there were a bunch of other wars that we got involved in because of, ummm, the reason(s) elude me.
Our single noble endeavor was WWII in which "The Greatest Generation" really did save the world.
So why exactly should God bless America? Enlighten me.

19. Exactly right. We need all the help we can get. |

I sat down during the 7th inning stretch yesterday when the ballpark organist played God Bless America. I agree with the bumper sticker, "God bless everyone--no exceptions."
It's a real shame 'America the Beautiful' isn't our national anthem. It's lovely, well within singing range of your average citizen, and much more appropriate. Well, except for the 'God shed his grace on thee' part. Sometimes he does, and sometimes he doesn't.

while I agree the debacles in VN and Iraq are horrible, and we pulled some bad stunts in Haiti, SoAmerica and Philippines, we do really good stuff too..
We are generous to a fault, sending more aid than any other country, our people as individuals also help in many many ways, from "Feed the children" to earthquake relief etc
our immigration policy, while spotty, has allowed millions to improve their lives and their families lives
don't paint us with a black brush for some misdeeds
In answer to your question, God should Bless America just as he blesses all men and women of all nations

US is not the highest aid giver either in terms of per head of population nor in total amount. Much of your aid is also highly dubious being, in effect, business subsidies rather than actual aid. Giving money and arms to Israel is "aid". Giving vastly inflated sums of money to US companies to "re-build" Iraq (despite the fact that international law says that the aggressors are responsible for rebuilding) is also counted as aid.
Personally I don't view the colonisation of the US, slavery or Vietnam as proof or otherwise of God "blessing" the nation - I'm an atheist and all the above shows is that power corrupts, whether that power is in the hands of an individual or a nation.

10. Why would anyone make a statement that |
|
named "God" as an absolute certainty? And further, no matter what your side -- why would you presume that God would bless anything or anybody, as per request?
Mario Cuomo had it right -- the difference is between faith and knowledge.

Let's remember that America is not only the heirs of the slaveowners , but the heirs of the slaves.
We're the Indians and the Mexicans too.
We're the ones who got done to as well as the ones who did.
I agree with that ol' black gay commie, Langston Hughes: the America I'm proud to belong to doesn't exist yet--but it will.
God bless that America.

So beautifully put.
That America is the one where our children 'will be judged not by the color of their skin but the content of their characters.'
