this is going to be one of those things that no amount of explaining will satisfy:

The president's term ends on January 20th at noon, Eastern Time. The date of the election has NO BEARING WHATSOEVER on that fact.

We can hold the elections tomorrow... we can hold them January 19th. Either way, the president's term ends on 1/20/05.
