Cheney's WIFE says gay marriage should be left up to the states

(Washington) The wife of Vice President Dick Cheney Sunday said she believes that the issue of gay marriage should be left up to the states. Her remarks Sunday, on CNN's Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer, puts her at odds with her husband and the Bush administration and exemplifies the fractures within the GOP over amending the Constitution.

"I think that the constitutional amendment discussion will give us an opportunity to look for ways to discuss ways in which we can keep the authority of the states intact," Lynne Cheney told Blitzer.

Blitzer then pressed her about the differences between the Vice President's stand now and that in 2000 when he said marriage was a states issue and indicated he would not support an amendment.

"I thought that the formulation he used in 2000 was very good," she said.
