Michael Moore opened "Stupid White Men" with a letter to Kofi Annan, asking for help from the UN because our country had been taken over in an illegal coup. He was half-joking, but I don't think it's that unreasonable of a possibility. Sure it would piss off the Kool-Aid drinkers with "US out of UN" bumper stickers on their trucks, but it would be for their own good.

After all, how many times has the UN gone into less-developed countries to make sure that elections run smoothly? It seems to me that if the democratic process is suspended in this country, however briefly, then we will have lost any authority we used to have on the subject. How can we justify going to war to free a country from tyranny when the leadership of this country, supposedly the "Shining City on the Hill", is seriously considering actions that would not be at all far-fetched in Saddam's Iraq?

If our leaders are scared enough to be voted out that they'll go so far as to suspend the democratic process, then isn't that reason enough for an international body to step in and help?

2. The UN doesn't make sure elections are run smoothly
They only monitor what happened.

3. SNARF!
You're joking, right? I'm certainly not going to U.N. bash but after the United States steamrolled ahead with its Iraq plans, do you think the U.N. has the power to do anything?

4. The Bigger question is...
how will the public respond if the administration suspends elections?

5. The UN has already been approached
by a group of Senators and said it can't get involved.

6. I doubt the UN would, but...
If they suspend the elections, I wouldn't be surprised if the US ended up having to take a few stars off the flag....
