1. They Have Their Orders |

If they want to appear on the Republican networks, they have to act like Republicans.

Viacom's hot bed of Republican Networks include MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central and that springboard of neocon talking point, BET.

2. Comedians and their audiences are lazy |
|
Even a fairly bright person like Letterman (and his writers) will settle for the memes: Gore's a liar, Clinton would rather get laid than govern, Bush is a dope. But this kind of mindless comedy does nothing but congratulate an audience on being smart or hip enough to recognize cliches--a REAL danger given not only the active negatuve rhetorical campaign of Gore = liar, but perhaps more perniciously when the comedians get us to lower our expectations of Bush by telling us constantly what a dunce he is (and not what political genius lies behind pretending to be a doofus).

If anyone is paying attention, its comedians. They have to read all this crap, interpret it, then make something funny out of it.
The last thing I'd call a comedian (at least a good one) is lazy.

7. So why is Letterman, eg, still harping on Clinton's sex life? |

6. is Joel Stein doing it? |
|
he's pretty funny, but he's also a right-winger. He calls himself a libertarian, but he has filled in for people on right-wing radio before. He's the Time Columnist.
