Would anti-gay marriage amendment actually pass?
It seems like it wouldn't even get close to getting a 2/3rds majority vote. Am I wrong?

1. It won't even get a majority
I believe that Zell Miller will be the only senator who is technically a democrat that will vote for it. Maybe another one will, but I doubt it. And it looks like as many as a dozen republicans will oppose it so it will not even get a majority and will probably get closer to 40 votes.

2. plus any amandment has to be ratified by the states
back in State legislatures. And I think 2/3 of them have to ratify. Never gonna happen.

3. Of course not.
It's not about actually amending the Constitution. It's about pretending that they're doing something to pander to the homophobic voters in this country.

"I tried to protect the sanctity of marriage from perverts and degenerates, but apparently Democrats don't hold the same American values as the rest of us. George Bush is FOR marriage, John Kerry is for Satanism. Yeeeehaw!"

It's a scare tactic. It plays to personal fears and cultural issues the same way that the Republicans always do. It's that whole, "Sure, we're fucking you over economicly, but we both like Jesus!" political tailspin. And, well. . . it works.

6. It will be great for re-election campaigns
When they are up for re-election they will say "My opponent does not hold the same values and traditions of America that I do. . ." if the incumbent voted against discrimanation.

And if they are the incumbent "I care about american values".

4. Here's a snowball . . .
Now, I'll lob this snowball into the depths of Hell. I predict it has a better chance of coming through the Inferno than the Hate Your Neighbor Amendment has of getting through the Senate.

5. No way....No how.
The right has made this more of an issue than it really is among Americans. Even on some of the moderate websites I have visited, many do not seem to care...as much as the Christian Right does, and we all know that they are far from the majority of voters. :hi:
