Is it difficult to move to Canada and become a citizen?
Just curious, because if Bush wins in November, I may be outta here. Vancouver B.C. is a beautiful city.

1. I wonder about that too...
Edited on Tue Jul-13-04 04:57 AM by Piperay
actually I am thinking of moving to Mexico. Since I am in California Mexico is a more realistic move for me. B-) I won't give up my citizenship though, I intend to keep right on voting Democratic by absentee ballot. :D

2. There's a point system
From what I've read, having a job offer, higher education degree and certain job skills are pluses. Being old and/or sick are minuses.

5. I dunno
But I'm thinking the same thing. I have an advantage, though: I qualify for dual citizenship, so it shouldn't be too difficult to do it. The only problem is that in most parts, Canada is a lot colder than the U.S.

for how long? With global warming (I know, it's a liberal plot!) Canada may be warmer than you expect.

26. Actually, Nova Scotia has had warmer and warmer summers
Edited on Tue Jul-13-04 08:54 PM by thecrow
... in the past few years.
I went to the Stan Rogers Folk Festival last year and we were sweating it out in 90 degree weather!
And... Nova Scotia is beautiful.
They really abhor Smirk there, as far as I can see.

Builds character and stifles the hard-right wingers.Snowshoes and mittens clash with their Armani suits and the salt and snow does a number on a limo's plush carpeting.

9. are all of you really serious !?
You are so willing to leave our country because a band of criminals chose ( and were able ) to exploit rules and laws to their advantage? These repuke cockroaches would love nothing more then for that to happen. We are being led by the weak. Don't be as weak as these Nazi Bastards.

If you are all truly serious about this, I say DON"T LET THE DOOR HIT YOUR ASS ON THE WAY OUT!

12. Leaving The USA is an option for you?
Why not stand up and speak out and then stand up and speak out some more? We have had just under 4 years of these criminals. Are you really willing to give up your life as you know it for people like this?

Sounds more like a personal flaw on your part.

16. There are many people thinking of moving
to a different country if * win this election. People have different reasons, it certainly isn't a personal flaw.

It's a choice. We've been fighting long and hard to get our country back, some longer than others.

17. Please...
a personal flaw? I am 47. This is the most incompetent, corrupt, mean, nasty, cowardly administration in US history, probably in the history of mankind. Yet there are people who will vote to keep them in office. They have the ability to cancel the elections or doctor the votes if the $300M doesn't convince enough people. They control the WH, House, Senate, scotus, and media, and are openly and with impunity threatening people like myself.

I am NOT going to spend the last 30 years of my life living in freeperland.

25. puhleeze, it is NOT just the past 4 years of dubya that has ruined the USA
It is the fact that we have been under ideological attack by Big Money for decades. That is why the Dems at the top of the party are more conservative than the GOPers were 30 years ago!

That is why the nationwide healthcare squeeze play is taking place here in America. We have no choice in government!

28. Pretty soon leaving the USA will not be an option

That's the whole fucking point.

They're already talking about "postponing" the Election

They were appointed not Elected.

They use Torture as an official policy of the DOD

The Patriot Act was just renewed Achieved by keeping the vote
open until enough votes were coerced out of Repubs that had voted
No

They are trying to expand the Federal Death Penalty Act to include
anyone deemed a Terrorist.

They have & will continue to Gut the American Constitution
Secret Trials
No right to Council
Held incommunicado.
Secret Prisons & Prisoners.

Now for the real cluster Fuck in all of this the American Corporate Media has become the third arm of this Administration doing it's
evil biding with a smile on it's face. Selling this Fascistic Shit to the American public 24/7 FEAR FEAR FEAR give up some of your rights for the good of the Country If your not a Terrorist you have nothing to worry about.

Your Attorney General the Top Cop in the Land if you will
is a certifiable whack Job.

You have Zones for protesting in.

The head of the Junta is so hated he only appears at Military bases &
controlled venues to speak the Talking Points.

He can not appear in public.

Your Vice PreZ is up to his eyeballs in corporate malfeasance and criminality.

To top things of they outed a deep cover CIA agent on purpose.
There is a power struggle going on among the different Branches of
Power.

The Repub Congress rubber stamps everything * wants.

They have control of the Electronic Voting Machine Industry.
Where they want you to vote but not be able to Verify your vote!

They claim the right to run around the World & preemptively invade
any Country they say is a threat.

This is not the whole list not nearly.

Now try this.

They are just getting started.

Who's going to Stop them.
They have every Draconian Law in the Book on their side
& FEMA along with 600,000 private Security Personnel ready
to do their biding.

If you got up tomorrow and CNN said their had been some kind of event
and Martial law was declared in the USA what would you do what could you do.

This I Know

You Couldn't LEAVE.

13. Yeah, I am
but it's not just the 'band of criminals' it's mostly personal reasons but the criminals are the 'straw that is breaking the camel's back'. I'm leaving whether Kerry or chimp gets in in November but the exit takes on more importance and more immediacy if chimp gets another term.

My Daughter is a Senior in H.S. and is seriously thinking on a Canadian University. Her reasoning... the potential of a military draft... Just wondering....

18. I don't think that would save her from the draft, but college in Canada
would make it easier for her to immigrate. I believe it ups her points a good bit. She may want to check with people like the American Friends Service Committee to see what it takes to qualify as a CO, and what other options there are.

Great advice.... As she is a Senior.. with a 3.9 gpa...I think she will be able to avoid the draft if it comes to that... I know in the past... being in college allowed you to avoid being drafted... I don't know what changes this administration will enact.

For cheaper housing, I suggest Edmonton (Alberta), Southwestern Ontario, and the Maritimes (very affordable land).

19. You used to be able to apply for refugee status...
But I think they changed to forbid that if you are coming directly from the US. I don't think any other country is on that exclusionary list. Maybe Canada will change their mind if * gets reselected.

Refugees can include:

# a human rights activist who is persecuted by the state for her criticism of government abuses.
# a union leader who is threatened with violence by businesses who enjoy tacit support from the government.
# a gay man or lesbian who is beaten up by gangs of homophobic hooligans in a country that outlaws homosexual acts.
# a member of a religion that is being suppressed by the government.
# a woman who is subjected to repeated physical abuse by her husband in a country where conjugal violence is condoned.
# a member of an ethnic group that is persecuted by the state.
# a teacher in a country where intellectuals are denounced as traitors of the people.
# a person who openly criticizes a rebel group in a country where the government cannot protect its citizens against rebel attack.
# a person who is persecuted because he is suspected of opposing the government, even though he is not politically active.
# the child of an imprisoned political leader who is viewed as a threat by the current regime.
# the witness of a massacre committed by the military that the government wants to cover up.
# a student activist after the government has suppressed a student movement.

27. Move now...
or get used to the polarization. Even if we win this time the Freepers will be back.
The political climate wont change because we have a Democrat in the White House.
Things are bound to get uglier. Those on the Right have struggled to get to where they are. The machine that put them there is still intact and they will use it with a vengeance. This is only the beginning.

29. If Bush wins
then I think a lot of people will be faced with a choice (especially around draftable age group) of whether to leave what looks to be a very scary situation and possibly face a draft, or to leave to another country. I have been thinking about what I would do if my name is drafted or if things get unbearable. I can either leave, or stand up for my beliefs and take the consequences.
I would really like to hear what other people think.
