I never thought I would say this but The Eyes of Tammy Faye is a good doc.
We rented it thinking that we would just laugh our asses off, instead we now all actually like Tammy Faye Baker Messner. Unlike Falwell and Robertson, the Bakers preached the love of the lord and taught acceptance of gays and people suffering from AIDS, a first for christian television. Their brand of Christianity was all about love, a far cry from the hateful drivel now on Christian networks. We were all convinced at the end of it that the Christian Colition didn't like them actually and purposely brought them down. Falwell totally screwed them over, and he was the one that started the Jim Baker is a homo meme.

We didn't know it was possible to hate Falwell anymore than we already did.

Tammy Faye is actually a decent person, and unlike Falwell and Robertson a good christian.

The documentary itself is narrated by Ru Paul and is kinda campy. But all in all it completely changed my opinion of Tammy Faye. We were all completely won over by her.

We are also all shocked that we live in a world where we like Tammy Faye Baker. Anyhoo, it is a good movie and is worth watching if you get a chance.

2. I agree
I once watched a great deal of Tammy Faye and Jim Baker's network when they were involved in it because I was fascinated by television evangelists.

From my recollection, they were never partisan in any way. But they were very greedy, however.

4. She's a total freak, but you can't help but root for her.
You should read her book, "Run to the Roar". Whoa. Utterly bizarro look at the inner world of charismatics.

5. Tammy's great.
I loved that film.

She's very outspoken and supportive of gays and lesbians.

6. I've seen her in interviews numerous times. I like her a lot.
She is an upfront, honest person who is accepting of most other people. It seems to me that her faith is genuine. And she's just a likeable character. Her life story is very interesting, to say the least. She's had the highest of times, and has encountered some of the worst things that can happen to a person.

7. That movie won me over as well.
Did you know she's fighting cancer again?
I saw her on Larry King several months ago and she didn't look too good.

8. Absolutely right on
I watched it expecting to be appalled/laugh... whatever. I came away shedding a few tears for her. Her acceptance of her own foibles, as in her eyes, was very refreshing.

9. She's always been quite a character
I have a soft spot for Tammy Faye, maybe it's the gobs of mascara but whenever she is on TV I gotta watch. I think that she is a good person, a little kooky and definitely has bad taste in men!

14. I have a soft spot for her, too.
I liked it that she had enough of a sense of humor to play Mimi's mom on The Drew Carey Show. She stuck through a really difficult time and came out in one piece.

The PTL Club was very unethical with it's money handling, however, the people who sent them money had a certain responsibility regarding their money, too. It was pretty obvious that the ministry was not using it's money appropriately. I don't think Tammey Faye had much to do with that, other than benefitting financially. She doesn't strike me as the type who could come up with such a complictated fraud.

Falwell will get his comeuppance, sooner or later.

10. I used to think that I hated her...
Edited on Tue Jul-13-04 12:50 PM by skypilot
...back in the '80s when that whole scandal with her and Jim broke. The '80s just seemed to be such a perfect decade for assholes and I just perceived her and her husband as pretty good representatives. I never doubted my perception of her until I saw that documentary. I came away liking her a great deal. I hope she beats her illness.

11. I never thought I could have a lower opinion of
Falwell than I already did, but that movie shows how rotten he truly is. The scary thing is that Pat Roberts is even worse than Falwell when you consider his shenanigans in Africa.

12. I never really cared for her. But I ordered the film from NetFlix.
Maybe I'll find something to like about her. I curious to hear the narration by Ru Paul. I have always liked him/her.

13. Tam' got cancer again.
Hub & I started watching J & T for laughs about 20 years ago. But they were sincere. Nuts, but sincere. They won us over.

It was actually good practice for the move to Texas 5 in '99.
