If Al Queda attacks the country on election day, what should be done?
Let's say on election day, as people are going to the polls and voting, Al Queda attacks the country in a huge way (suitcase nuke, biological/chemical attack, more planes going into buildings, etc.)

What should be done? People will be scared to go to the polls and the results of that day will be tainted.

If I recall, on the day of 9/11 there was a mayoral election in NYC, and it was postponed.

1. well, if you're not dead, go vote
pretty simple if you ask me.

How many people died on 9/11? 3,000?

How many people die from gunshots every year?

How many people die from car accidents every year?

You have a much greater chance of being killed on your way to the polls by a bad driver or a gunshot than you do of a terrorist attack EVEN IF ONE IS UNDERWAY at the time.

Have some balls, baby.

4. Go and Fucking vote
No terrorist punk will stop me from voting, and I will do everything I can to prevent this government from cancelling my voice in the political process.

7. let's use NYC as an example
if al queda attacks the city again, the resulting mass hysteria and chaos will greatly effect NYC turnout in the election. NYC is the democratic base of the state and routinely votes for dems (2:1) in presidential elections.

Now, what happens if all those people don't vote because they are too worried about saving their lives from immediate death than voting?

If the election goes on, Bush could conceivably win New York states electoral votes because the republican upstate parts of the states would vote for Bush and NYC would so underperform because of the terrorist attack that Kerry couldn't make up the difference.

9. This business of messing with election day is a dangerous, slippery slope
I will not partake in it, period.

And by the way, Gore would have won New York in 2000 even without the City.

6. It's up to each state what to do.

And within each state, each district. Does it make sense to cancel or postpone a national election if one or two cities' access to the polls is disrupted?

14. Certainly not cancel, nor delay...extend the elections
Lets say early on election day the unthinkable happens. NYC and/or other cities are in shambles.

My solution would be to open the polls wherever possible as normal, but then keep them open for the next several days or even week if necessary. In areas severely affected, you open the polls as soon as possible.

Turn voting day into voting week.

That way no one (who survives) loses their vote, and we don't start the slippery slope of delaying elections.

I wouldn't worry about it. I would worry more about the "intelligence" agencies.
