Does Iron Mike know what kind of game he could be getting into?

That is more or less the question a top Washington Republican was planning to ask Mike Ditka.

Virginia Sen. George Allen, head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee and son of a Hall of Fame coach himself, flew into Chicago Tuesday to personally huddle with Ditka, one day after the Bears legend said he was thinking about running for the U.S. Senate.

"Sen. Allen is planning on meeting with Coach Ditka tonight in Chicago to discuss the level of thought that Ditka has put into the race and the implications that that would have on the life that he lives right now," a GOP strategist in Washington said Tuesday.

If you want a good laugh on the sidebar they list GW as an athlete because he owned the Texas Rangers.

This was great for my first morning laugh. I get to vote in this particular election, and as much as I love Da Coach, Obama is getting my vote.

2. And please note how stupid that sidebar is...
Athletes in Office

They've got Ventura (out of office)

Gerald Ford (out of office)

Steve Largent (out of office)

Jack Kemp (out of office)

Bill Bradley (out of office)

They try to make Dubya an athlete cause he played Yale Baseball and because he owned 1 percent of the Rangers at one time.

24. I think Poppy was the baseball player at Yale
W was a cheerleader...

Other athletes:

Jim Bunning - great pitcher, wingnut senator from Kentucky

JC Watts (out of office now)

Not that being an athlete is an automatic disqualification, Ford, Kemp and Bradley all had long political careers and were quite popular.

7. The Quad Cities Newspaper put it best...
In a measure of the Illinois Republican Party's desperation and Chicago's devotion to Da Bears, there's a movement afoot to draft the team's tough-talking former coach Mike Ditka to run for the U.S. Senate.
Desperate is right. I don't think he'd get as many votes from suburban Republicans, as the party may think. Plus, somewhere I read between 12-15% of all Republicans moved into Illinois in the last ten years. I doubt they'll think Ditka is charming or funny.

A. He's got a long list of actions you wouldn't expect from a U.S. senator, but enough time has passed -- and enough apologies offered -- for him possibly to be forgiven by voters. Here's a recap:

He was fined $20,000 for grabbing his crotch and yelling obscenities at fans. He was accused of nailing a female fan with a wad of gum in San Francisco in 1987 after a loss. He was thrown out of a New Orleans casino in 2000 after being accused of throwing a lit cigar at a pit boss after a ruling went against him at a craps table.

His biggest run-in with the law came at the peak of his popularity as the Bears shuffled to the Super Bowl. He was convicted in 1985 of driving under the influence after his Mercedes was stopped on the Tri-State Tollway near O'Hare. Ditka, who just arrived from a victory in San Francisco, had booze on his breath and was slurring his words, police said.

Ditka refused a breath test. His lawyer, Don H. Reuben, told a judge: "Mr. Ditka does not want anyone to believe he got any preferential treatment because his team is 9 and 0." That prompted spectators in the courtroom to break into applause.

Oh, can't have a pervert who tries to get his wife to "perform" with him in sex clubs, so they go for a short-tempered drunk who's name clicks with most people when they think of boner pills, not Super Bowls....

20. MJ already gave $10,000 to Obama
Michael Jordan Contributed $10,000 To Barack Obama Campaign

(Washington-AP) -- Campaign finance records show U.S. Senate candidate Barack Obama got a large contribution from a high-profile citizen: Michael Jordan.

The basketball superstar donated $10,000 to Obama's campaign.

Obama says he debated whether to frame the check or cash it.

34. Dave Duerson backs Obama. . .
. . .after the GOP said that Dave Duerson wanted to run as a Republican he denied it and called them desperate. . .LOL

-snip-
State GOP officials said the former NFL pro signaled his interest in replacing Ryan by faxing his resume to them Friday. But Saturday, Duerson told the Chicago Sun-Times he never submitted his name, saying anyone could have lifted his resume off his Web site and forwarded it to the party.

"Apparently, it was some very wishful thinking," Duerson said. "I'm certainly not interested in running against Barack. That's ridiculous."

Duerson said he had been approached about replacing Ryan before the investment broker-turned-schoolteacher dropped out of the race. Duerson said stepping in during "a crisis" is not his style.

"Clearly, they are desperate," Duerson said.

28. Ditka is white, Jordan is Black. . .
. . .unfortunately that means that in a lot of people's minds Ditka has more clout than MJ. Also when Juanita threatened divorce and MJ's whole Washington Wizards experiment MJ's star started to fade, he is still very popular but he no longer walks on water.

30. Mike's Pretty Much Toast Here, Too...LOL
He burned a lot of bridges when he headed off to Washington...but that's a Lounge lizard topic.

MJ's been a very strong supporter of Democrats, and I remember him campaigning for Clinton in '92.

However, come to think of it I can think of one black athlete who probably will come out for Ditka...Mike Singleterry. Fundie and forgot a lot of what got him to where he is now.

The same Michael Jordan who refused to back Harvey Gantt against Jesse Helms in the North Carolina Senate race in 1990, saying "Republicans buy sneakers too"?

Maybe MJ finally got some sense now that the height of his glory days are past.

32. This is right out of the puke playbook.
They have no interest in governance - only power. From their pov, Ditka is the perfect candidate. Macho, local hero, 100% name recognition - and zero political experience or even an interest in politics. Yet, they'll run him for senate. One of the 100 most important positions in our government. Just like Boosh, Reagan, etc.

I'd sure love somebody on the left talking about this.
