This chart could be a campaign ad!
Don_G actually posted this chart in another thread, but it's worth its own thread (if it hasn't had one already). This chart could be a campaign ad!

2. Unfortunately, most average Americans don't understand deficits, and
the rest that do, don't care. Sigh.

Then when the congress and/or Prez have to increase taxes years from now to pay off the deficit (hitting our 401K's pretty hard), the people will blame the politians who are in power at that time.

So much for the advantage of having tax deferred 401(k) accounts. The whole idea is premised on the fact that your taxes will be lower when you retire. But as Suze Orman says, do you really think the government is going to start a program where it will lose money?

7. My dad, a Repub, says, "They'll just print more money. What's the
big deal?" When I said that I didn't think they could print that much money, since that'd make the dollar worthless, he then said, "The government will make money by selling bonds to the citizens. We all win."

Sigh. I didn't really want to get into with him, about the foreign countries from whom we are borrowing, how taxes will have to be raised, etc.
