bush 41 as deep throat...?
someone did a poll in the last couple of days here as to who was deep throat. a couple of folks thought it was bush 41, who was all too happy to bring down his former mentor Nixon in order to pave the way for the neocons.

that led me to an aha moment. if true, NO WONDER Bob Woodward is a lapdog of the Bush family. He seems to be COVERING for *. No wonder he hasn't been willing to touch 9-11 despite his Watergate legacy...

The Daily Howler explored the Tenet "slam dunk" statement on WMD's.

<snip>

..at one point, Russert turned to an iconic tale from Bob Woodward’s ballyhooed book. No, the anecdote never exactly made sense. But so what? Within the mainstream press, it became the most commonly-cited item from Woodward’s puzzling tome. The story concerns George Tenet’s “slam dunk.”

<snip>

This is December of 2002. The president having doubts about the quality of the intelligence information on Iraq. What turned the corner? How did he become so emphatic and convinced during the first three months leading up to the war in 2003?

<snip>

This anecdote from Woodward’s book has been recited again and again. It’s a pleasing story from the White House perspective; it suggests that Bush was scrupulous and alert, then was led astray by George Tenet. But as we noted when Plan of Attack appeared, the anecdote doesn’t quite make sense. Earlier in his book, for example, Woodward said that Cheney and Bush had themselves begun misstating the weapons intel back in August 2002. By Woodward’s own assessment, Bush had been explicitly overstating the intel for three solid months by the time this meeting occurred. Why did Bush become so scrupulous? Woodward doesn’t try to say. Nor does Woodward ever say what happened after the December meeting. If Bush was concerned about the intel, what sort of follow-up sessions occurred? Woodward doesn’t report on that. We are left with only one thing—the pleasing image of The Scrupulous President, cautioning Tenet not to “stretch.” Scribes recite it again and again—failing to note that this scrupulous president, and his VP, had themselves been “stretching” the intel for months at the time that this meeting occurred.

1. I think it quite possible... I've never bought the Tenet "slam dunk"
comment (much less the Bush*-attributed intense questioning re: the quality of evidence for WMD). We know that Tenet would have allowed this kind of lie to go unchallenged (at least while he was still employed as CIA Director).

AwakeinIndiana, I think this may well explain Woodward, who seemed to have done "backwards handstands" in creating a book that is almost a double entendre--facts that seem to damn Bushies* can be turned inside out to make the little chipm look comparatively good.

As for Bush I as "Deep Throat," who better than a former CIA Director to know all the dirty linen and selectively leak it?

4. agreed
that's how i saw the book too. praise by "faint damnation". i know there are lots of candidates for deep throat. but the more i think of it the more it makes sense that bush 41 would be the guy. if it were a lesser light it wouldn't be such a big deal for them to come forward; in fact, they could bask in the glow of celebrity. bush 41, however, can't do that, for all sorts of obvious reasons.

feels more every day like we're pulling at threads on a cheap suit. when it comes unraveled, look out.

2. Many insiders say Deep Throat was Richard Ober
http://www.textfiles.com/conspiracy/CN/cn09-42.txt

Richard Ober was/is the criminal who ran the illegal domestic political suppression programs authorized by Richard M. Nixon as part of the Huston Plan. These programs used every resource available to the United States of America and were known generally as Operation CHAOS.

I was a musician in 1969, of course, and I had been associated with a highschool chapter of SDS. I survived being targeted by Operation CHAOS-they always had a thing against creative folks--especially musicians.

Now here comes support of a long term VRWC.
During his final days as Director, Richard McGarrah Helms authorized an operational description change from "political dissidents" to "international terrorists" and the illegal MH CHAOS became the International Terrorism Group-also headed by Richard Ober.

Richard Ober could have been Deep Throat too.

5. I agree!! Poppy is always in the Middle

I have a post somewhere this week about Poppy. I had not thought about Poppy as Deep Throat but it puts the nail in the coffin for me on this slime ball.

My tin hat post talks about...

1. Poppy can't remember where he was on the day JFK was killed.
Barb and GW were watching the motorcade pass by according to a DU thread. Some have said he was on the grassy knoll-that is not to suggest that he killed him,just suggested that he was checking things out.

2. Neil and Hinkley family member had dinner the night that St. Ronnie was almost killed. Huum, Poppy in the middle again. Huum Poppy would have been President if Reagan was killed.

3. With my tin hat on, I also said that I believe that Poppy is really the one that pulls Cheney's strings. Why else would a former President allow his son to be used in this way? Poppy is Deep in the middle of this entire administration.

Have you noticed how he tries to act as if he is a by stander? Ha! This man is in charge of this country right now.

4. His own reasons for being friends with the Saudi's -oil and greed!!! Look at the way he greets his Muslim friends in MM's picture. This is a man that will stop at nothing to get power and money.

5. Was it MM that said he is the only Past President that wants the daily briefings from the CIA or something to that effect. Why would he need them if his son was the President and capable of making decisions - ha ?

6.Condi was hand picked by Poppy,so was Colin. Tenet was in Poppy's pocket too.

His Throat Is Very Deep and I think you are on to something!

6. good summation of 41, thanks
i have been reading a 1992 book about Bush 41, can't remember the name but it touches on a lot of that. plus the bay of pigs and some other key events.

all the years i have thought about watergate, and this never occurred to me until yesterday. it does tend to explain a lot, especially in light of enduring deep throat mystery. who better to cover his tracks than an ex-CIA director?

and you are absolutely right about the entire bush 43 administration being bush 41's cohorts. who's the puppetmaster of *?

umm, yeah.

7. The puppet master for *

Glad to know there are at least two of us who think this way(smiles.)

I think that Poppy put Condi there to baby sit the chimp. Poppy thought that she would be able to guide him when he signed his name and pronounce the names of countries for him. Poppy was able to see that she spoke clearly and had a very structured personality. Poppy thought that she could make Chimp do what ever Poppy told her he should do. Since Chimp could not care less,he would rather be Baseball Commissioner so he could have trading cards, it works.

I'm not 100 % sure but I think Condi used her "charm" to make Chimp believe that he needs to learn all his words and sign his name to all the papers before she gives him some.

So, Poppy tells Condi and Condi makes GW do what Poppy wants. Poppy tells Cheney what to do and Cheney does it. Bush 41 probably has so much CIA dirt on Cheney and Halliburton that Cheney's heart would stop beating if the truth got out.

Poppy put Colin there because he wanted it to look like there was a Middle of the Road person in the position. Instead, Colin is not what many think, he is a Neo Con too. Poppy knew that when they were Buddy Buddy from the Gulf War.

I am even more convinced that GW is Deep Throat! Woodward is not the same person since Watergate. Poppy pulls his string now too.

I will now step down from my soap box.

8. i think we're onto something here
the book i mentioned earlier is called "The Immaculate Deception" by Russell Bowen. I dug it up after getting home from work. Nixon was a mouthpiece for the Bush family; it was Prescott Bush who actually recruited Nixon to run for Congress in 1946.

This is where it gets a bit murky. Bush was appointed by Nixon to head RNC in January 1973; then in summer 1974 he became ambassador to China. Bush is mentioned prominently in the Watergate coverup, he was clearly "in the loop" on that. So he would have been in a position to know enough to deal info to Woodward. But the motivation is hard to see given his tight relationship with Nixon.

However, it would have been just like a Bush to undercut Nixon once it became clear he was toast...and the Deep Throat role is tailor made for a CIA spook.

i love the Condi idea. A tutor with "benefits" for 43...lovely! And it explains the goofy adoration she has for *.

Bush 41 is beginning to look like the "magic bullet" himself: an incredible trajectory, taking him from the Bay of Pigs to the JFK assination to being Deep Throat to running the CIA to Vice-President (after arranging the arms for hostages deal) to President, then spending 8 years as a shadow figure who engineered a return to the presidency via his son's coup with brother Jeb's help. Oh yeah, almost forgot about Neil's Silverado and the looting of the S&L's. And the Carlyle group. And Melvin Bush's involvement in the WTC 9-11 demolition. And Poppy's little session with the Bin Ladens on the morning of 9-11.

Soapbox? what soapbox...
