But, from what I gather, he hasn't filed a statement of non-candidacy (or whatever it's called in Illinois), so he's technically still on the ballot.

I remember a colleague who was speaking admiringly of a famous American General (I don't remember who it was) and describing how he behaved towards his subordinates...abominably. However, the climate in IL will be strange.

First, Ditka does not have a few skeletons in his closet. He has LEGIONS of skeletons in his closet. However, I think many poeple think Jack Ryan was unfairly run off the ticket. Obama will have to be careful with his attacks on Ditka.

Second, Chicago will be the base of Obama. White ethnics in Chicago probably have a soft spot for Ditka (but maybe not).

Third, do not underestimate how much race plays in IL politics. Statewide black politicians poll 5 -10% higher than the vote totals. When push comes to shove (especially downstate) white people's racism comes to the forefront.

This could make for a very dangerous race for Obama.
