How many DUers speak French? |
|
Because that thread http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x1398403 Made me wonder. In a recent documentary(Le monde selon Bush(The world according to Bush))i saw Joe Wilson speak in French(and he had almost no accent)and other American personalities and i was wondering how many Americans (and in this case)DUers, can speak French.(Or if you're a Freeper:How many Americans speak Liberty). So?

|
I get the chance to speak it. I try to keep up by watching France 2 TV every night and keeping fit via my French language CD-R. But nothing beats using it consistently in real life situations.

Roughly translated, (really rough, since I don't know the verb for "switch"),
I studied French for 2 years in high school, but in college I switched to German.

11. 3 years of high school French, and an immersion course ... |
|
I wouldn't say I'm fluent, though. (I went to school in Ontario -- people had to take at least one year of French -- what with Canada being officially bilingual.)

16. Je parle le Francais un peux, trop mal! |
|
I studied the language for three years in high school....that's a long long time ago....1970-1973....and it was twenty years before I met someone else who spoke French...first a Canadian, then I worked in Bethesda for awhile with some people from French-speaking African countries. I was surprised how much came back to me....but now that has been over a decade... Still, when my husband had to go to the emergency room in France, I was able to squeak by enough to communicate what I needed to do. By the way, there ER rooms are amazing. They were working off basically just a board for a desk and a stool. People were in, sewed up and out in absolutely no time. And a lovely ER doctor drove us home 20 miles out of his way in the middle of the night after his shift when we could not get any taxis and the trains were stopped by the wildfires from the drought last summer. (My husband had left his medicines at our hotel 20 miles away.) Vive la France! And the French people were all very nice to us, and spoke great English (much to my embarrassment!)

My parents are Danish and German, so I speak German fluently and average Danish (understand it and can read well and speak slowly w/ grammatical errors).
Took 3 years of Latin and 4 years of French...can understand it if spoken slowly and read French and comprehend about 75% of it...speaking is so-so...enough to get me by when vacationing, ordering meals or if I needed to avoid getting arrested...and ofcourse to make sure they know I don't support George W. Bu$h...
