My repub father in law just told me that DU was started by |
|
a bunch of conspriacy theorists. I have no idea where he is getting this stuff but he really wants to believe that every thing I tell him is lies. The AM radio bunch must be filling his head with something. He told me moveon was a communist organization not to long ago. To which I responded that Bushco and the neo-fascists were much more like Russia's communist leaders as far as oppression of discent and all that that intails and then explained to him what moveon actually was. I think it bothers him that my hatred of everything the neo-cons do is unwavering. I'll call the neo-fascists evil and he'll say "You don't mean that." I always say that I don't think all repubs are evil (they aren't) but that Bushco are some of the most evil people on earth. His comment about DU was upsetting because for the first time in a while he seemed like he thought he had a valid argument. I said that that idea was retarded and begged for him to turn off FOX and the radio.
It makes me sad because he really doesn't want to believe that America could be as bad as we all know that it is.
Anyhoo thanks to whatever crap he was listening to I am going to have to work just that much harder to make him see the light.
He is willing to watch F 9/11 so that is good but I think I am going to have to hit him with Outfoxed, and if he didn't hate Clinton so much The Hunting of the President.
ARG I hate hate hate the lying media that makes our jobs so much harder.

Hell, you can use facts to prove anything that's even remotely true.

6. DU is all Will Pitt typing to himself |
|
When I first came here (in 2001, I think) there was talk over in Freeperville that DU didn't really have the high number of members that is on the site, they thought Will Pitt was typing the whole thing. Does anyone remember that?

8. I heard the DU = conspiracy theories thing |
|
at a meeting of Democratic activists in SE PA a couple months ago. People were comparing web sites, talking about where to get the best info. I mentioned DU and was told "Oh I never look at DU, I'm not interested in conspiracy theories."

10. I was watching Daniel Ellsberg on Free Speech TV this morning and he |
|
was discussing the lying that he participated in during the early 60s relating to Viet Nam and he was drawing parallels to Iraq now.
He mentioned that most people don't want to conceive that their government could behave so badly (the lying, setting up the Gulf of Tonkin, POSSIBLY 9/11). I've been really angry at my parents, those folks my age and older who SHOULD have remembered all of this shit. Should've remembered Watergate, Iran-Contra and been a lot more skeptical....but nooooooooo....bought this shit hook, line and sinker.

13. Daniel Ellsberg is right |

It is very depressing to actually face just how bad the situation is here, and all that our government is involved in.
If you're a citizen of a totalitarian country, you can allow yourself to see exactly what's going on, and how bad it is, because you don't have any part in the decision making.
It's totally different in a democracy......... *WE* the people are responsible for what is going on in our name. To really look clearly at that would be not only depressing, but probably more than some people can handle. Remember, all their lives they've been fed the diet of "We're the best country in the world...."
To actually face the fact that not only are we NOT the best, but that parts of this country are downright evil, and furthermore, we all had a hand in making/letting that happen, is a serious step to take mentally and emotionally.
Remember opi suggesting that Repubs needed to have some 12-step program available to them after viewing F911?
Addiction withdrawal is heavy, and people don't usually do it willingly.

15. Conspiracies are going on all the time... |
|
To automatically dismiss them as bunk just because the major media doesn't cover them would be STUPID, jus as it would be stupid to promote theories with little real evidence or basis in fact.
I take all the conspiracy theories here with a grain of salt, but who knows, some may be true.
They are no more ludicrous than Rush's constant theorizing that "The Clintons" manipulated the democratic primaries, or whatever else, "to get Hillary on the ticket in '04/'08/whatever".
I believe he also theorized that Bill Clinton personally murdered Vince Foster to hide Hillary's lesbian relationships...

And God knows Americans should have seen enough in the past 40 years to recognize a pattern.

18. a few simple facts for dad ... |
|
Many on DU did not believe the bush administration when they talked about "mushroom clouds" and Saddam's cache of WMD's ... were these DU'ers conspiracy theorists? perhaps so ... but let's give credit where credit is due ... DU'ers who did not believe bush had the evidence to prove his case, whether theorists or not, had some pretty damned good theories ...
and what about all the talk about the war being fought for the benefit of bush's corporate buddies? a little research into some of the corruption that Halliburton has admitted to seems to lend at least a bit of credibility to those wild DU theories ... that were stealing money from our military budget that was already inadequate to provide the troops with much of the equipment they needed ...
tell your dad to lighten up on the labels and look at the facts ... not everything discussed on DU is accurate ... but a healthy skepticism of those who have lead us down the rat hole in Iraq is really not so bad ...
