If Mike Ditka decides to run for Senate in Illinois-
might he even help carry Illinois for Bush?
a lot of lazy lard-ass angry-at-the-world white guys who might not otherwise have the intellectual inclination to make it to the polls
could be energized to do so by 'Da' Coach', and while there, also cast a vote for the idiot-in-chief.

I'm sure Kkkarl you-know-who has considered the implications, and has asked mr. scaife to pry open the wallet for iron mike- the pride of pennsylvania.

1. na ga happen
even if he runs, which I hope he does, he's got SO many skeletons, and is so unstable, ignorant, and LAZY that there's no way he can campaign effecively

he will be a gigantic embarassment to the pugs

I await with bated breath for his announcement, possibly tomorrow

however, it was reported on a sports talk show in chicago today that he drove off in a huff from a meeting with pug big wigs, apparently POd that they'd leaked the meeting to the press

so....who knows what's going to happen

run, Mike, run!

Don't want to rain on your parade but Bush was the definition of the above and that didn't stop about half the country from casting their vote for him.

67. Not The Same Thing
First, he has no working apparatus behind him. The Repub party is in total disarray here in Illinois.

Secondly, from central Illinois south, his "Bearness" will have no impact. People in Carbondale and Vandalia don't care about the ex-coach of the CHICAGO Bears. He's connected at the hip to the city, and they don't like the city that much.

Thirdly, he won't like running from behind. Just like in his coaching career, he was a strong front runner, but he's no rebuilder. I don't think he'll take on a lost cause, but is merely basking in the attention borne of desperation.
The Professor

Is a football coach and commentator, who, as part of his jobs, has been courting faux "controversy" about pointless, irrelevant sports "issues" for ages. (I love it how many of that ilk of guy are fearless about expressing their patently trivial sports opinions as if they were attacking belief in God or something). Anyway, I'm sure he'll try that tack in the campaign and come down in flames.

33. Actually
this is something that plays to anti-death penalty people.

Some nations have banned executions purely because of the requirement they be public. It's a LOT harder to support executions if they are public.

Can you imagine the uproar here if executions had to be public?

66. Yep
I've often thought it would help the anti-death penalty side, of which I am a member.

Have public executions, maybe even aired on TV. Let all the people who are so in favor of the death penalty have to watch the person die themselves.

I think the taste for it would go down, except among those sadistic enough to enjoy it, and they would never be against capital punishment anyway.

But your run of the mill soccer mom who is for it as long as she doesn't have to witness it would sour on it quite a bit, in my opinion.

Think about it. A University of Chicago professor of Law/State senator vs. a surly football coach who's political education probably consists of talk radio and maybe some college 40 years ago.

34. you're so far off base here
first of all, Obama is going to be in position to dictate the terms of a debate, cause he'll be so far ahead in the polls

second of all, do you know what Davis's approval rating was?

check it out

do you know what Obama's are?

and you clearly know very little about Dikka's past

including how VERY UNPOPULAR with most of the Chicago media he is

they can't WAIT to bring out the stories they didn't print when they were merely sportspage fodder

this is going to be a Titanic scenario for the Illinois pugs

poor Judy Barr Topinka........you know who she is, don't you? just saw her praising Dikka on TV, with a very unconvincing look on her face. they have nobody else

I can't WAIT

bring em on!

Savor Ditka's eloquence before he fades again

July 14, 2004

BY MARK BROWN SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST Advertisement

Long before he was being seriously considered as a possible candidate for the U.S. Senate, Mike Ditka was Chicago's philosopher-king.

Holding forth for sports reporters whenever the opportunity presented itself, Ditka often veered from football into his views on life.

His remarks were not necessarily illuminating as to what we could expect his positions to be on the major political issues of the day, but they certainly give us some insight into Ditka the candidate.

Before the Ditka bubble bursts under the harsh light of reality, therefore, let's review some of Ditka's greatest rhetorical hits. In other words, I'm milking this for all it's worth.

the Grabowski's, the type of people who are going to vote for Ditka don't read columnists-
they watch the happy news team on channels 7, 5, 32, 9, and to a much lesser extent, 2.
and yes, all the anchorpeople on those networks have been smiling and happy about the possibility of Ditka getting into the race all day- as have been the radioheads on WLS, WGN, The Score, etc... the type of media that the Grabowski's pay attention to.

not very chicago savvy, are you?

Apparently not. Ernie Banks couldn't even get elected as an Alderman in Chicago because he ran as a Republican.

Chicagoans like their sports and their sports heroes, but they take their partisan politics so seriously that local elections in chicago are always determined by the outcome of the Democratic Primaries.

apparently not.
they don't vote for chicago aldermen, but they do get a say when it comes to Senator.

Ernie Banks running for alderman is absolutely no comparison- only the voters of ONE ward vote for each alderman- it's not even a city-wide candidacy.

and yes, i most definitely live in illinois- 43 years now.

30. Down state is pretty much going to go for the Republican, no matter what
They are not Bears fans and won't vote for Ditka simply because he was the coach of the Bears. Those who vote for Ditka in most outlying areas would vote for Oberweis if he were the Republican candidate.

McHenry, DuPage, etc. are all Republican counties anyway.

Putting up Ditka is a calculated move to cut into Obama's chicago base where he is extremely strong. Cut enough of his cvotes out in Chicago, and he will lose.

Chicago voters are far more mature to fall for the star factor as evidenced by the Ernie Banks campaign.

Putting up Ditka COULD result in many republicans in Northern counties voting for Obama because they are split about 50-50 between being Bears fans and being Packers fans. There are Republicans in some of those coutnies who would vote for ANYBODY AND cut off their right arms before they voted for Ditka.

Anyone who thinks that the collar counties are going to reflexively vote republican is high on drugs. The news coverage for Ditka getting in is like the news coverage for Ryan's getting out==entertaining, easy to cover, everyone's opinion is as good as another, and not indicative of a single vote.

I would have expected(and was hoping for) a higher level of discourse.

I live in Minnesota, and Jesse was facing two very boring party machine candidates. So he managed slip in with a < 40% plurality. However he was also helped by the fact that he had an actual platform, which appealed to young voters and suburban yuppies, and actual political experience as mayor of a Twin Cities suburb. Mike Ditka is a right wing blowhard who can't control his mouth who isn't in touch with the politics of Illinois at all. He doesn't have any of the advantages Jesse or Arnold did.

besides, he was only in one superfans sketch (the last one, along with john goodman)

joe mantegna was the host of the first sketch, but wendt took the role over (as the character's brother) when he hosted the show and kept the role in recurring appearances

CHICAGO -- This morning in downtown Chicago, Mike Ditka left a secret meeting with IL GOP decision makers, angered about the media being tipped off.

Ditka was to meet with members of the IL GOP State Central Committee and to speak via conference call with national level Republicans.

As word of the meeting leaked out to the press, Ditka reportedly was angered when met by reporters, exited the meeting promptly and hopped into his black Escalade, and left, obviously upset.

Rush's Football record might be good enough to run on too, or at least as good as Bush's baseball record was! I'd say if the GOPers want to find and expert on Foreign Relations they'd go with someone who served in the World Football league! The GOP might want to look at the Klitschko Brothers in 2006 if Bush gets another term in November! The Klitschkos could help the GOP ram their agenda through better than Newt and Dole used to!

79. So Elginoid...what is the motivation ?
What would be the motivation for Obama voters to switch to Ditka ? There has to be something more than the fact he was the coach of the Bears. Name recognition is not enough. Arnold won because Gray Davis was about the most unpopular politician in California history, and Ventura won with 37% of the vote against two very unpopular establishment candidates.

87. Exactly
The Ditka situation is totally different from Ventura and Ahnold, both of whom were basically protest candidates. I don't see why people in insist on comparing them.

Also, while I was no big fan of Ventura, he wasn't a total newcomer to the game ... he did have some life experience and some political experience as background that Ditka doesn't have.

As I am hearing Ditka has decided not to run...but the polling I saw had Obama in the mid to high 50's...If that were the case, and the poll could be relied on, there would have to be a significant number of Obama voters switching to Ditka.

from: Savor Ditka's eloquence before he fades again

Before the Ditka bubble bursts under the harsh light of reality, therefore, let's review some of Ditka's greatest rhetorical hits. In other words, I'm milking this for all it's worth.

Ditka: "I'm not begrudging anybody anything. I'm just saying before you can eat the whole pie, there's got to be a whole pie there. You just can't eat more pie than there is. If the owner bakes one pie, you can't eat two. If he bakes one and a half and says, 'This half is for me and nobody can touch it,' then you better eat just one pie."

This sounds like Ditka scolding the Fridge at the training table, but actually he was talking about contract talks between NFL players and owners. You could see him applying this pie philosophy to federal budget negotiations.

Ditka: "I love my dogs. Dogs are forgiving. They always think you're a good guy. They're always glad to see you. They're glad to see anybody. If they haven't peed on something, they'll pee on you."

He'd get my dog Gilbert's vote, but Gilbert, like Ditka, isn't registered to vote in Illinois.
