Do football coaches automatically qualify for Senate candidacy ?
Tom Osborne, in the House, may be an exception. He has the temperament and judgement to do the job, in my opinion, even though I disagree with his policies. However, the Senate is known for its decorum and respect for others on the opposite side. Senate candidates should embody those qualities. Does Mike Ditka fit the bill ? No, I don't think so. The Repubs hsould be careful what they wish for. This guy is a loose cannon and they will be embarrassed by his antics if he were to win. He cannot control his temper or his tongue. End of story.

1. The son of a football coach.
George Allen, is a repuke Senator from Virginia. But he'd probably be in jail for hate crimes by now if daddy hadn't been rich and famous. He has a racist past which I witnessed firsthand years ago.

2. The Ditka thing is a big reach
The GOP in Illinois is in so much trouble. Fitzgerald is giving up his Senate seat. That will leave Judy Baar Topinka (State Treasurer) as the only statewide elected Repug. She apparently wants to run for Gov. when Blago's term is up in two years.

There are not good candidates to go up against Obama. Jim Edgar & Jim Thompson (former Gov's) declined to run. The most reasonable choice, Steve Rauschenberger won't run. He's a wonk state senator. With four months until the election, the GOP has to create some buzz, and boy are they with the speculation about Ditka.

3. are we talking about the same Tom Osborne?
This is the guy who started Lawrence Phillips in the 1995 Fiesta Bowl after Phillips beat up his girlfriend, dragged her down three flights of stairs by her hair and slammed her head into a mailbox.

Yes - a fine leader of young men. :eyes:

Pfft

P.S. I won't even mention his decision to go for two vs. Miami in '84

5. Yes, living X's and O's since childhood and being able to
speak about the X's and O's on TV, supremely qualifies on for the highest deliberative body in the land. Football is life.
