1. I'm Shocked Ben Nightmare Campbell Voted "NO"
But then again, he's retiring this year - I guess he could afford to do the right thing and not cowtow to the GOP leadership.

12. I'm not that surprised
There were some republicans like Chafee and Collins who support gay rights so they opposed the amendment. There are others that are libertarian so they opposed the amendment which would be like Sununu's opposition. However, Campbell probably mixes both his moderate views on many social issues like abortion and being from the Mountain West, he is probably somewhat libertarian in his thinking. So, that seems like a good combination to oppose the amendment as well as the fact that he is retiring and can do whatever the hell he wants for the next few months. This is a guy that is probably more liberal than his voting record. The only reason he is a republican is that he wanted to be in the majority after the 1994 elections, so some of his votes may be to fit the demands of the republicans. Now, he doesn't have to worry about that.

17. Yes, I know - I'm in Colorado
Reason why he switched was when the Repubs got control of the Senate and he wanted to keep his chairmanship of his committee. So he made a deal with the Rs to keep his chairmanship if he switched horses.

7. he does not
He just doesn't agree with gay marriage and he sees what is happening. But it is not a huge surprise he voted this way. He is a social conservative. I support gay marriage so I am not pleased with his stance on this. However no one is perfect.

9. He spent a huge amount of time on the Senate floor
denouncing gays when he voted for DOMA in 1996. He claimed his state didn't have any gays in the 1980's as he fought against the Ryan White act. He is a hater of gays and his lousy record on gay issues shows it. He voted against both hate crimes and ENDA (on of around a half dozen in each case). He is about the worst Senator on gay issues irrespective of party.

14. Not really
Robert Byrd now supports the hate crimes leglislation, I think. It seems that he has changed his mind on that issue. He still opposes ENDA and supports DOMA and the FMA, but there are a lot of republicans that are much more anti-gay than him. Byrd's support of hate crime legislation put him in the top 2/3 of the Senate in gay rights since about 1/3 oppose those hate crime legislation. I think he has gotten slowly better over the years.

15. a clarification
I meant one of about a dozen Democrats opposing hate crimes and ENDA not a dozen Senators. I realize that was unclear. If he has changed on hate crimes then good for him. I stand behind the idea he has a very lousy record of a Democrat, but in fairness, as a Republican he would be around the middle or slightly better.

As much as I respect Sen Byrd for some of his stands (Iraq being one notable example), the man has an abysmal track record when it comes to gay rights and issues. He rates a disgraceful 29% in the Congressional Scorecard of the Human Rights Campaign (see www.hrc.org) Byrd's homophobia has a long track record and the latest battle for gay marriage rights is just one more example of his aggressive homophobia.
