Once again, Californians get bent over...
...and take it in the shorts.

$9 billion in price gouging, and Duke Energy settles with the State for 207 million.

43 cents on the dollar. Nice profit.

It still requires approval by federal and state regulators. Gee I wonder if they will approve?

I guess that's what we get for being a blue state.

4. Sadly, Californians deserve it!
When Gray Davis was screaming bloody murder about the plundering of the state by the power mogols, all he got was grief. No support from the people. Instead of anger at the crooks, Californians took it out on him.

Then they elected the Austrian stooge, who was a co-conspirator with the energy criminals.

But, don't worry, he'll just borrow money to pay the bills!

6. We do NOT
Lots of Californians DID NOT vote for Der Gropenfuhrer.

What's up with sweeping generalizations on DU lately?

23. Thank you.
From this Californian who did not vote for Arnold, and who did support Davis in the recall mess.

What I deserve, what my state deserves, is to get all of that money back, plus interest and penalties.

25. not enough voted to keep him out
Edited on Wed Jul-14-04 11:30 PM by SemperEadem
and that's just as bad.

Those who voted for him are star-struck and ignorant.. they get all mesmerized by the pretty words and sparkly lights and totally forget that reality isn't on hold while they indulge their stupors... they elected an unproven actor with the mindset of "aw, give the guy a chance...". Hey, why don't I give my 8 yr old niece the keys to the car?

Now, we find out that it was a team of writers and special effects guys we should have had run for governor instead of this Bavarian oaf.

7. These Are the Same Crooks Who Bought and Paid for the Recall
> When Davis was screaming bloody murder about the
> plundering of the state by the power moguls

...the press was too busy fawning over Arnie to cover it.

The media was shamelessly stumping for Schwartzenegger,
and always blaming Davis for the state's energy problems.
They never hinted that our energy woes were actually being caused by the criminal
activities of Enron, in collusion with the FERC, who are Enron's enforcers.

They are getting warmed up to do the same to Kerry as they did to Davis.

10. Big media was WAY too helpful getting Arnold elected. It was sick.
Don't blame the victims of fascism.

When all the biggest corporations are lined up to fuck you over, it takes a real hero to step forward and defend your interests. Davis was a good guy, but we needed a bigger hero.

It's not citizens' fault that no heros picked up the flag for the.

you don't want our 54 Electoral votes come november?

Frankly, I'd be pleased as punch if CA could, say, secede from the union. There's a helluva lot more sanity here than in most other places I've found. Yes, we had the recall. If you had lived here, you would know that the state got horribly reamed, deliberately, as part of a political-corporate conspiracy between Enron and Cheney and god knows who else. Yes, I'm pissed about it, but I've got bigger fish to fry than Arnold right now. And, frankly, Gray Davis- although I voted for him twice, as well as against the recall- didn't do himself any favors by being an incredibly ingratiating, crappy politician, alienating the left on a smorgasboard of issues -- not the least was his knee jerk refusal to grant parole to anyone, and his toadying up to the prison guard union, and the guy was about as inspiring as a mildew-laden kitchen rag to boot. Only when he realized he was in real trouble did he bother to try to connect to the Democrat Base, which, by the way, is very strong in my state--- and, for the record, is currently providing a big chunk of the capital and energy of the Kerry Campaign..

I see you're from Texas. I wouldn't be throwing any geographical stones, if I were you.

12. Forty three cents on the dollar is better that I expected.
I read on DU at the time Arnold was running that he promised to accept 8 cents on the dollar. Gray Davis wasn't at blame for anything that happened, but he made a couple of lame decisions, like drivers licenses for illegals, that just pushed him over the edge. It seemed like he didn't want to win. Arnold will be rewarded with the Presidency.

29. Thanks for the links. I knew a large part of the power generation...
...was from alternative sources and was curious about just how much power is produced in state and from what sources. If I remember correctly, some of our Green Power program was modeled after California's program. Now that "wind farming" is starting to take off here I hope the state gets some money blown its way. :)

"tuff shit" for you out there in West Virginia if the worlds fifth largest economy collapses, and throws the rest of the country into a depression of a magnitude to which the world has never seen the likes of before.

And "we" people did not vote him in.

This is what California gets for putting Arnold Schwargeggner in office as your governor. I think a large amount of Republicans and energy company chairmen wanted Davis out and Schwargeggner in because they knew that Davis would sue them for everything they stole from California, but Schwargeggner would not. The people of California fell for the lies and now they will pay for it for another two years. A few days ago someone mentioned that Schwargeggner may not run for a second term. Maybe the people who wanted him to run only needed him for one term. It only takes one term to makes deals with these companies that allows them to pay back pennies on the dollar and once these deals are made their is no going back.
