Ladies' Home Journal interviews with bushes and Kerrys--sad bush quotes
The Ladies' Home Journal did a sit-down interview with both the bushes and the Kerrys and they are in their newest issue.

Some of bush's quotes are so classic. I feel like I lost IQ points just reading it, but here goes:

When asked about running for president in 2000 and how hard it's been since, he said this:

"When I look back at it, I'm glad I ran, and it's been a fantastic experience for both of us. It's been an opportunity to spread freedom and peace, an opportunity to put policies in place that will leave behind the likelihood that people are going to be prosperous, and that's really important. I've enjoyed it. I really have."

Um, ok, my question is what the F_CK does he mean by putting policies in place that will LEAVE BEHIND the likelihood that people are going to be prosperous??? That's no typo, it's straight from the magazine (August 2004 issue). I had to read it four times to make sure it said what it said. Then I read it aloud to husband, who said, "The man is a total retard." What a Freudian slip! I'm sure he HAS enjoyed it!

Then later, he is asked if he ever has trouble sleeping. He says because he exercises so much, he never has any trouble sleeping (I'm sure you don't, Chucklenuts).

He's asked what the most disappointing thing is about Americans and here is his answer:

"I'd say the most disappointing thing about Americans is that we don't exercise enough, that a lot of disease could be prevented from just walking 20 minutes a day."

Well, he just gave away his AIDS plan. Just WALK!!!!

What a weird thing to pick. And did you notice he said "we" don't exercise enough right after he says he exercises so much he never has trouble sleeping?

Another gem: the interviewer asks him about Karen Hughes' decision to go home to her family in Austin and links that to women juggling career and family. She asks him "What advice do you give to your own daughters as you think about this question?"

His answer? "My advice is get married first!" No elaboration.

Um. Ok. Another great one from Bunnypants: "I mean, marriages need to be saved every day! Seriously!"

Still later, he is asked a question Kerry got as well. I will quote the question, then the answers from each man. Make your own conclusions.

Question: "We have all experienced an upgrade in security at airports--now there's more discussion about rail safety. In New York City, some five million trips are taken on the rails and subway every day. What are your thoughts about whether it is possible to really secure rails?"

bush's answer: "Well, first of all, we'll never secure America 100 percent anywhere. We are a free country, we are a big country, we are a relatively open country, and if somebody wants to blow somebody up, it'll be hard to stop. Look at the Oklahoma City bombing. Now having said that, we're much more aware. For example, whenever we get any indication that somebody might try to do something on the subway, like they did in Madrid, we alert the subway people in New York."

Here's Kerry's response: "I think you can do a lot more than we have done. The test is not 'Are we safer today?' the test is 'Are we as safe as we ought to be today?' I acknowledge there are some limits, and you can't harden every target in America. If someone wants to commit suicide, he can most likely find a place to do injury to people. But you can take steps to reduce the probabilities of catastrophe. Nuclear plants. Chemical plants. We clearly could have better security with respect to trains and bridges and tunnels, and we also need much better security with respect to ports. We are inspecting only about 4 percent of the containers that come into America today. Experts say you've got to get up around 20 percent to begin to have deterrence. We ought to be accelerating those kinds of efforts very significantly. This Administration hasn't done that. They've had other priorities called tax cuts for the wealthiest people in the country."

So there you go. Even if I was completely NOT tuned into politics before, all I'd have to do is read those two responses to the same question to know whom I feel safer with.

3. I really wonder
why *'s handlers let him off the leash to do interviews. Are they secretly hoping for self distruct? And for that matter, how stupid are those women married to the assholes?

4. Actually Laura was part of the interview too
and she sounded about 5,000 times more intelligent than he is. Which isn't saying much, but she saved him on a couple of questions by piping in and either actually answering it or getting his answer back on track with some decent elaboration.

Sad.
