Surprises in the FMA vote.... |
|
Democrats FOR:
Byrd (WV) Miller (GA)(ok, no surprise) Nelson (NE)
Republicans AGAINST:
Campbell (CO) Chaffee (RI) Collins (ME) McCain (AZ) Snowe (ME) Sununu (NH)
The big surprises for me are Byrd for and Sununu against. And I thought Hagel was opposed...

no surprises from Snowe and Collins here. They get our votes because they vote our way!

Does he have a gay family member or something? I think Chaffee is really a Dem. He should switch parties.

I would be happy if he switched to Independent, but would be happier if he switched to the Democratic Party.

16. I think they are trying to make the point that they |
|
stand for the real Republican Party. Sadly, there are only a handful of them left.

He is a good, decent guy and the Republicans don't deserve him. He usually votes with Democrats anyway.

4. It was just a cloture vote, right? |
|
Maybe the Democrats who voted for it did so because they thought that actually voting against the Amendment itself (rather than just cloture) would make a stronger statement.

14. highly unlikely considering it was Zell, Nelson and Byrd... |
|
Zell and Nelson usually vote with the GOP, and Byrd usually votes against anything that may favor gays or lesbians.

a great constitutional scholar. I think one can be opposed to gay marriage and still believe an amendment to the constitution is unnecessary and unwise.

9. Chaffee - no suprise, real conservatives don't want big government |

was one of the most outspoken advocates against the bill.
There's difference between being republican (true conservative) and a neocon in BushCo. Real conservatives believe in balanced budgets, small government and preservation of national parks. BushCo does not.

12. I'm kind of suprised that Daschle voted against since he's... |
|
running for reelection here in mostly conservative South Dakota and his opponent, the insufferable John Thune, has spent alot of money advertising his opposition to "gay marriage"

because he is always waving around a copy of the constitution. Then again, it is only a procedural vote. Who knows.

|
ok, here's your cloture vote, no bring to the floor for a full vote and see if the two thirds are thier and then chastize them for wasting all this time when they KNEW they never had the 67 votes, just wanted to stick them with a vote to use against Senators in the Fall

and as such a lot of people conclude he is good on other issues.
Unfortunately he is NOT very progressive on social issues...
He also doesn't like atheists if I remember correctly.
