This definitely adds fuel to *'s fire...

Why does Kerry want to shoot himself in both feet?

4.  It was a procedural vote only

(and the result of the cloture vote was not in question). They would have returned, had the cloture vote passed, in order to vote on the actual bill.

6. Because the Republicans...
Were going to say..."see...those two are homo lovers". Kerry and Edwards were smart to stay away from the vote. This will backfire on the Republicans.

7. Why don't you know the facts?
You seem like a smart person, so why don't you know what Kerry actually said, having read it somewhere for yourself. And if you have, why don't you know the difference between a cloture vote and final passage?

And if you know all of the above, what's your motive for posting right wing talking points?

The Republicans didn't have the votes. Now watch them back peddle. In politics, never pander when you don't have to.

<snip>

Kerry spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter said Kerry and Edwards would be in the Senate to vote against the amendment if it came up, but they will not be there to vote on the procedural measure.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Today was a procedural vote, this was not the amendment. . .But now the amendment is dead.

Kerry has been speaking out Today about the amendment and Bush's use of it all day.
I heard snippits of a speech today that was pretty harsh.

He also released this statement:

For Immediate Release

July 14, 2004

Kerry Statement on Federal Marriage Amendment

Boston, MA - Senator John Kerry released the following statement today:

"The floor of the United States Senate should only be used for the common
good, not issues designed to divide us for political purposes. Throughout
history, amending our Constitution - the foundation of the nation's values
and ideals - has been serious business. However, even Republicans concede
that this amendment is being offered only for political gains. The
unfortunate result is that the important work of the American people -
funding our homeland security needs, creating new and better jobs, and
raising the minimum wage - is not getting done. Had this amendment reached
a final vote, I would have voted against it, because I believe that the
American people deserve better than this from their leaders. When I am
president, I will work to bring the nation together and build a stronger
America."
