Yes Virginia, there are Two America's.....My letter to our paper
Edited on Wed Jul-14-04 06:11 PM by vetwife
There is absolutley no denying that two America's exist today.
There is an America of special needs and the America of special interests.
How could anyone look around and see that there is not an equal playing field of opportunity in this United States. We have in the special needs America, people who sleep in doorways and alleys, many veterans who have worn the uniform and borne the battle. These people served their country and came back with broken limbs, lives and emotionally scared forever. They seek healthcare while they
are told to wait and that funding is being cut.

There is the elderly and physically and mentally challenged who choose between a meal and a pill to lower blood pressure, or some other life threatning disease. There are many who only eat one meal a day and then that meal is usually not nutritious enough to maintain one's well being.

There are children who go to the thrift stores and consignment shops and missions to find shoes and clothing for their school apparel, to be ridiculed and taunted by the more fortunate who have Tommy Hillfinger or some other named brand clothes. The children who no longer qualify for reduced meals due to cutbacks bring a mayonnaise sandwich to school as they watch their classmates eat pizza. They are frightened as they fear they will fail due to the lack of the No Child Left Behind Act totally unfunded. The teachers, underpaid and overworked are terrified of losing their jobs because of so many cuts in educational programs. Maintaining good teachers with overcrowded classrooms, salary cuts, and a threat to lose their very jobs due to the high demands manadated on our educators today.

There are people in the special needs America who spend time walking and crying as they look for work that has been shipped overseas and they are facing foreclosure, evicition, and no healthcare.

In the special interests America, a bad day is losing a few hundred dollars from a bad day at the Stock market. The special interests America wants more tax cuts to go along with their their tax shelters to avoid paying their fair share. They also will take their company headquartes and seat the headquarters in Bermuda as not to pay any tax. They walk around in 4000.00 suits and will quickly tell you that you are lazy and want a hand out from the government, if you too do not belong to this special club. All the while, as they take the 401K from their hard working employees, they sit around a pool and talk about the market and how they cannot decide on Yale or Harvard for their children. They vacation in the Alps or Europe and have their children enrolled in some of the finest
private schools known to educators. The harder the Special needs works, the more they succeed monetarily.

The Special Interests of America does not have time to mentor a child, or see up close and personal the suffering of the special needs America. They have to get their stock reports and play a round or two of golf. No one said they did not work. The work they perform will not get them physically dirty or bored, sick or uncomfortable. They have perks. They have the finest healthcare. They have the best doctors and they politicans and judges in their pocket. Most of the special interest America does not send it's children to battle, as they have enough greenback to send them to fine schools which allows deferrments and access whereas no one
in their America spends equal time in jail for the same crime as the other America. All of this depends upon if you are special needs America or Special Interest America.

No one bedgrudges those who have invested wisely, or made a great living in the Special Interest, all people want is equal opportunity so they can look to their children and family and have pride in their work. No one wants to be on welfare (Thank God) as it is being privatized and needs are not being med with the cuts. They just want a decent meal, a job and medicine. They want the opportunity to serve their country without a demand because the United States has mislead them into unnecessary wars. The people in the special needs America do not want to take away anything from anyone who has rightfully made well for themselves. They just want justice and a level playing field so America can be America again.
We are still striving to form a more perfect union but the divided country is not the direction this country should be proud of.

Yes Virginia, there are two America's. Sad but true.

5. Very well written...
This has been coming for a long time, and it is high time that we admitted that it is no longer something to be dealt with in the future, it is here, now! Fascism and Social Darwinism ARE the order of the day. Congratulations to us??????? (Sarc off)
