Suppose I wanted to recall Senator Wayne Allard...
Edited on Wed Jul-14-04 10:54 PM by Liberalboy
He has really pissed me off with the whole Gay Marriage thing. He BARELY won the vote this last time around and he certainly does not represent me.

I did some research and Colorado is a handful of states that allows recalls of all levels of state representation. The website at http://www.ncsl.org/programs/legman/elect/recallprovision.htm states that all I would need is signatures containing at least 25% of the votes cast in the last election for the official being recalled, and to have the signatures gathered within 60 days. The set-up would be much the same way as it was done in California with contenders on the ballot.

What do you guys think? Would the GOP track me down and pull out my toenails? I am really pissed!

Here are the statues supporting the recall: Colorado - Const. Art. 21, §1; Colo. Rev. Stat. §1-12-101 - 1-12-122, 23-17-120.5, 31-4-501 - 31-4-505

1. I don't think you can do it . . .
States with recall provisions ordinarily apply only to state officials. Federal elected officials (representatives and senators) are not generally subject to state laws, a lesson Oregon found out the hard way during the Bob Packwood fiasco.

Packwood, like Allard, won his last campaign by a narrow margin while dissembling in the last days before the election about whether or not he was a serial groper of women. Our local journalistic champion of the people, The Oregonian, showed all the curiosity of a pro wrestling referee, taking the word of his campaign manager Elaine Franklin that there was nothing to the rumors. It was up to the Washington Post, which had the goods on Packwood but not confirmation, to break the story a few days after Packwood won.

At the time, The Oregonian's ad tagline was "If it matters to Oregonians, it's in The Oregonian." Some local wags did good business printing up bumper stickers that read, "If it matters to Oregonians, it's in the Washington Post." Happily, Packwood was finally driven from office halfway through his six year term, and resigned in disgrace. Of course, now he makes tons of money feeding the graft of the system as a hotshot Washington lobbyist, and has since married his dragon lady, Elaine Franklin. However, mention of his name will still evoke a visceral reaction in most Oregonians.

Perhaps you could mount a campaign to get Allard turned out of office. Colorado, similar to Oregon, isn't wholly redneck.
