Editor, Times-Dispatch: If a veteran of WWII and Korea may speak to those who defame our President while they protest the current war against terrorist nations:
They should try to understand that we are in a war, and our President is taking proper action. One must understand that we have been attacked in the same manner as occurred at Pearl Harbor. A like number of Americans were killed. Even if we did shoot down these attackers, that might have saved our ship, but it would not have stopped additional youths being trained to repeat the attacks on other American war vessels. Shooting down one kamikaze did not deter enemy action, just as stopping, catching, or killing Saddam Hussein or Osama bin Laden will not stop the cult that believes all infidels must be destroyed.
We must stop the sponsors and those who provide safe harbor and fund these terrorist attacks. Those cult leaders are in Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Libya, and Palestine. When we shut down one area they appear in another, and the attacks continue. We must destroy the cult before it gets to American shores.
Our President and all who know the real danger are trying to protect us. God bless them and sustain them in this awful war. L. Peter Wren. richmond.
Clinton Funeral Could Be Done on the Cheap
Editor, Times-Dispatch: The U.S. may reduce its budget deficit when Bill Clinton eventually meets his Maker, not by switching brands of car insurance but by forgoing a state funeral on the magnitude of Lyndon Johnson's and Ronald Reagan's.
President Bush 43 already proclaimed Clinton's eulogy at the unveiling of 42's and Hillary!'s official portraits. Bush bestowed such lavish praise upon his predecessor that he left little to say as a final tribute, short of certain facts best unspoken on such a solemn occasion.
I don't wish Brother Bill an early demise - and probably it will occur long after mine, considering my seniority - but one of his contemporaries will need a deep reservoir of imagination to surpass the Chief Executive's eloquent words. Indeed, his main legacy is that of beating the rap after impeachment. So, why waste dwindling federal funds (caused entirely by Bush's tax cuts, of course) in a vain exercise of repeating the epitome of praise?
Since some Democrats have complained about the expenses of President Reagan's funeral events, the government might satisfy fiscal fussbudgets by holding a simple service at his future Little Rock library. In it, excerpts from his me-me memoir masterpiece, his recent "60 Minutes" interview with Dan Blather, his innumerable TV talk shows, and his million-buck speeches might suffice. Who better to extol his exploits and character than himself?
Thereby, citizens of that tragic time will be spared an undue strain on the national budget and escape being thrust deeper into debt. David L. Johnson. richmond.
