I mean, after all, I "may" have spent the weekend slapping Rupert Murdoch around with a splintered 2x4. I didn't, but until I told you for sure it was at least a (fond) possibility. By the same token, John Kerry's election "may" cause Osama bin Laden to simply turn himself in. It probably won't. . . but you don't hear them pushing that story, either. :P

18. Suitcase Nukes And GOP Budget Priorities
If there are any suitcase nukes, that goes to show the priorities of the Republican-controlled Congresses dictating legislation and passing budgets when it came to keeping tabs on fissile materials from the old Soviet Union, doesn't it?

If this Faux tale is actually true, the GOP deserves a world of blame--for their actions in the past in allowing this to happen, and for being so slack as to allow such a situation to come up.

They should be fined and reprimanded. There is a certain responsibility that comes with their license to broadcast. To spread rumors about possible suitcase bombs in the country, with a specific number of seven, goes beyond the bounds of legitimate journalism. Where's the FCC when you need them?

36. And check out the ready-made spin here! It will be Clinton's fault
Edited on Thu Jul-15-04 12:10 PM by Minstrel Boy
when the suitcases explode.

Fox and others (essentially "private contractors" of "homeland security" like http://www.homelandsecurityus.com) are feeding the right a steady diet of this red meat. If - when - this babies blow, the spin is in place. And it won't be pretty. It's Clinton's fault. (Even as the author of this piece - Sean Osborne, Network Analyst for the "Northeast Intelligence Network" - praises Bush, he says Clinton "borders on treason.")

Here's Osborne:

Third, to the specifics... Information I came into back in February of 2004 was not 20 nuclear weapons, but between 35 and 40 weapons on US soil. The Nuke search teams so publicly deployed last Christmas/New Years holiday season remain as the primary indicator of how seriously Uncle Sam regarded this information. Kudo's to the administration of george W. Bush for taking concrete actions in response to the threat.

I also received other direct and corroborative information from a source who worked within US and NATO nuclear planning. I was told point blank that the US lost the handle on foreign nuclear weapons back in 1993 - and we still have not re-gained the full capability of accounting for enemy warheads.

I view Mr. Williams admission in his book and on FoxNews as corroboration of both of my sources as far as the information goes that indeed enemy tactical nuclear weapons are currently on US soil awaiting deployment a order.

...

Beginning in 1993, when the Clinton Administration took office, the agenda consisted of the wanton and systematic gutting of American military capability and intelligence collection. So much so that before the end of that year the United States had "lost the handle" on accurate intelligence information on where enemy nuclear weapons were deployed and stored. According to my source we have to this date not re-acquired such intelligence capability and it might be some time before such capability is restored. This is, of course, assuming that we have the time to re-acquire such intelligence capabilities.

The 'suitcase nukes' made by the Soviets back in the 80s had a very short life-span and required a massive amount of upkeep...

But there aren't seven of them and they aren't all in the US....

From what I heard when I studied in Russia (granted, in Fall '95), there were only 3-5 missing. The rest the government knew the whereabouts of. I'd be surprised if as many as seven were entirely missing and all were in the States.

Of course, there is also the legitimate question of whether they even work . . . Apparently, they weren't tested after they were developed.

51. If they had them, they would have already set them off.
Exploding a suitcase nuke is not like simultaneously hijacking four airliners. There is no need for excessive planning and coordination. If a suitcase nuke really was smuggled into the US, it would very likely be detonated as soon as it could be brought to a desired area. Waiting around would only increase the likelyhood of being caught.

60. Snopes has information about similar story...(the number "7" again!!!)
Just how similar?

(snip)
The article quoted above gained prominence when it appeared on the web site of the Asia Times on 15 November 2002. Purportedly taken from an interview with a "Mohammed al-Usuquf," said to be the #3 man in the al-Qaeda terrorist network, the article alarmed many readers with revelations such as the claim that al-Qaeda has had nuclear weapons in place in seven large American cities for over a year and is merely waiting for the right time to detonate them.

http://www.snopes.com/rumors/nukes.htm

Snopes says this story is false.

However, just how difficult would it be for FoxNews whores to dust off this urban legend and add a "new twist" by making the seven nuclear bombs of the "suitcase variety?"

It seems the number "7" is popular in stories about nuclear bombs and mid-east terrorists...

if anything happens like that i'll blame FOX news very loudly and scream for the complete and utter destruction of all their assets brick-by-brick. if they know something so sensitive like that, before eveyone else, and won't share/assist/demand USA gov't to save us then i shall directly pin the blame on them.

sure, let them say that. let them know they'll have a national riot against them if they directly exposed us to harm and deliberately left us helpless.

hmm, complete and utter destruction, hmm. 'k, fine, you can scare us, but we people can scare right back. if this ever happens it's THEIR ASS that gets thrown into the ocean. 'k, go ahead, mutual assured destruction, let's see how successful this game can be played... let's see if they have the balls for the next move now that they are going to be held responsible for their actions/inactions.
