I Just Found the Newspaper I Thought I Had Lost Dated...
September 12, 2001. Bold headlines..."ACTS OF EVIL" with pic of the collapsing south tower taking up most of front page.
On page two...there it is...Card telling Numbnuts what has happened as he reads about the pet goat, and on the editorial page, the cartoonist has penned FDR's likeness and beside it part of what he said to Congress on 12/8/41..."With confidence in our Armed Forces--with the unbounded determination of our people--we will gain the inevitable triumph---so help us God."
And we have Numbnuts speaking from Nebraska in his usual "intelligent" manner..."Freedom itself was attacked this morning by a faceless coward, and freedom will be defended." Well Georgie...the features of that faceless coward of which you spoke are becoming more and more evident...you should take a good loooonnnggg look in the mirror!

2. I keep two old Newsweeks next to my desk -- 9/17/01 and 9/24/01 --
The cover of the first features Bush's face, and the words: The Secret Vote That Made Bush President.

The cover of the second features three firemen raising the flag over the rubble of the WTC, and the words: God Bless America.

3. interesting that they drew FDR and not Bush ...
And how many newspapers used FDR's "Day of Infamy" quote as their headline on Sept 12th?

Maybe because nothing reassuring or inspiring was coming out of the Oval Office at a time of need?
