Does anybody know what the SAFE Act is?
I read about it on Ken Salazar's campaign site. It sounds like it is supposed to counter act the Patriot Act in some way. Any info?

2. here....
1 . Security and Freedom Ensured Act of 2003 (SAFE) Act (Introduced in House) - H.R.3352.IH

2 . SAFE Act (Introduced in Senate) - S.1709.IS

I'm having trouble linking directly to the text, but go to Thomas and enter "Security and Freedom Ensured Act" or the number and you'll be able to get the bill texts, histories, sponsors, etc.

3. Bill of Rights Defense Committee has detailed information
about the SAFE Act and other pending bills designed to amend the Patriot Act (Kucinich's H.R. 3171 "Benjamin Franklin True Patriot Act" appears to be the most comprehensive effort).

"On March 8, 2004, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi announced her co-sponsorship of the SAFE Act. In a statement, she said, 'we need to look at measures to restore the federal judiciary's role to ensure that the Attorney General's far-reaching powers are not abused. The SAFE Act... would modify the Patriot Act by requiring court approval for the FBI to obtain records and wiretaps. The SAFE Act would also make clear that the exercise of political protest is protected."

scroll down to read more about it (includes a link to that same Attorney General's letter to Orrin Hatch "warning him that Bush will veto the SAFE Act"):
