Any old farts like me remember Election 1972?
For any of you witty and musically inclined - we need a song mix - they did one about Nixon that was awesome.

They had some fake debate mocerator asking old tricky dick questions, and then they play popular song riffs as answers. One song was Sock It to Me.

Any takers on producing one for shrubbie dub dub..?

1. I remember those bits!
They would play them on the radio when I was getting ready for school. They did several of them on different subjects, even outside of politics.

If you had a really clever one today, I don't know who would play it other than college radio.

2. I was 8 years old but I remember my dad saying when Massachusetts
went to McGovern--"It's the start of a trend!!" He thought that NY and some of the other big electoral states like ours at the time--California might also go for McG--but that was the high point of the night for that good man (along with DC).

4. That was the first time I voted.
There were lots of funny songs back in the old days when AM radio ruled.
If you do a mix, also do one with songs from "Classic Rock" for us "baby boomers."
I look forward to hearing it played in the DC area.

6. Is there a song "In other words"?
Shrub says that a lot - Franken did a segment of his show a few weeks ago with how many times the idiot cowboy says that. I've taken to listening to his speeches just to count them up. The other day I think I heard him say it 20 times if he said it once!

5. I remember those old jingles, and I agree it's a great idea.
I think a better idea would be to have one for Kerry/Edwards. You know, the kind that are short, but stick in your mind like the little ditty from a commercial. I'm not very good at thinking up those things, although I've been victim of unconsciously humming them while at work. There's got to be some folks on DU that are good at it though.

I wouldn't worry about nobody playing it! Just get a few places like AAR to play it a few times and it will catch on nationwide.

12. Also my first time voting.
pleased to cast it AGAINST Nixon.
a bunch of us went down to a local school to vote; we all had hair past our shoulders, patched jeans, the whole Neil Young look. You could tell it really pained these old-time election judges to hand us ballots. It was great fun.
Too bad about the result, though. Fortunately Nixon self-destructed in less than two years.
Perhaps the same will happen to Bush if he manages to, um, hold onto the presidency.

15. I remember that day vividly.
I was in D.C. in the Air Force stationed at the Pentagon. All day long WGTB out of Georgetown University broadcast anti Nixon statements, pleas to get out the vote,( "Vote, we urge you to, we plead with you, vote. It keeps you regular.") and music by John Prine and The Fugs among others. The also played a side of Firesign Theatre's "Anythyng You Want To". ("Crack, crack'd cheeks and break, wind, break. We'll die on land or live at sea for History's sake.") All in all a very memorable day with the inevitable ending.

As a side note, when inauguration day came along the Repubs could not sell many of the fancy $50.00 seats in Lafayette Square across from the WH to view the parade. They gave them away to college students and GI's to fill the seats. It was a cold and blustery day in more ways than one.

Woof

18. It was the second time I voted in a presidential election but

I don't remember the songs at all. We were, however, living out in the boonies (how many younger DUers know what 'boonies' stands for?) and couldn't get decent radio so it was all records, tapes, and those new 8-tracks for us!

It's a great idea. Associate Kerry with songs that are memorable and well-liked, preferably songs from the sixties, seventies, eighties, and nineties, not leaving out any demographic.

23. I Remember Them!
(song snips in brackets <> )

"So, Mr. Finnity, What's your opinion of the campaign, so far? <Why's everbody always pickin' on me?> And tell me, where were you when you heard you had the Democratic nomination? <I was takin' a bath, just a splashin' in the tub!> And who were the candidates? <There was Lolli-Pop and uh, Mary Sue! Good Golly Miss Molly was even there too!>
And what do you plan to do, Mr Finnity, if you win? <Woooo! Let's have a party!>

I remember them well!

I think, with today's music, you might have to go to earlier bands for clear lyrics. New and old mixed together.

Here's some ideas:

So, Mr Bush, is it true that the GOP enforces a sort of groupthink? <Walk this way! Talk this way!> And what are your opinions of Mr, Kerry? <He's a rebel and he'll never ever be any good!> And of your running mate, Mr Cheney? <I will follow him! Follow him wherever he may go!> And, tell me, what is your opinion of the reports from abu Ghraib? <Lies! Lies! You can't believe a word they say!>

I'm fairly certain that you can find what you need easily on the internet. Google the term 'novelty records' (the industry term for these) and see what you find.

Now for the update:

Dubya is a nut
He has a rubber butt
and every time he turns around
he goes "putt putt."

30. From 1960: "Nixon is a gentleman,

Kennedy is a bum,
Kennedy chews tobacco,
Nixon chews gum."

Think perhaps the GOP is a tad childish? I never heard anything like this that was slanted toward a Dem.

After JFK was elected, the joke was that money would no longer have the words "In God We Trust" but instead "In the Pope We Hope."

32. read The Boys on the Back of the Bus too
talks about how TV was still pretty new.....republicans had figured out that if they released something just before the national news, the networks would have no time to check the info if they didn't want to get scooped

so republicans were basically able to write the news coverage

the democrats never quite figured this out

Just a few weeks short of my 22nd. birthday. In those days, you couldn't vote until you were 21. I remember how excited I was. I hate the way so many 18 year-olds these days take their voting rights for granted.

By the way, my candidate lost 49 states.

and knew all about him.

I wanted to do an ad that showed all the horrible scenes of the times, flag draped caskets, burning Asian Children, Kent State, Racial Riots. Snap shots in black and white.

As these pictures held the screen for two or three seconds, one after the other, you could hear a chant in the background which became louder and louder, "Four More Years, Four More Years, Four More Years", and then silence. Fade to black, and white letters on a pitch black background which read "Can we really afford Four More Years of Nixon?" George McGovern for President

35. I was only 7 but I hated Nixon.
I remember marching for peace and against the Vietnam war, while wearing a tie-dye peace sign shirt that I made myself. Everyone I knew was for McGovern and against Nixon, except for the cranky people down the block. I had McGovern bumper stickers on my bedroom walls and school books.

The soundtrack of my life of that era: hippie anti-war songs, funk and soul music, jazz and second line. Great tunes by Otis Redding, The Meters, Chicago, Stevie Wonder, etc. were scavenged by all us kids and anti-Nixon (pro-McGovern) lyrics were added ad lib.

Now, we have Bush to make fun of. The great thing about Shrubya is that we already have numerous nicknames with which to rhyme.

44. I remember Election '72!
Edited on Sat Jul-17-04 11:31 PM by gauguin57
Though I wasn't quite old enough to vote, I had worked in my local Democratic headquarters and I put bumper stickers all over town. I still have my "Dump Nixon" button. I just KNEW my efforts would lead to McGovern being elected president. I was just so SURE!

Boy, did I cry my eyes out on election night. I also cried my eyes out in '68, '76 (when Mo Udall didn't get the nomination) and '80, '84, '88, (a bit in '92 when Bob Kerrey didn't get the nomination, but I got over it when the Big Dog took over!), and 2000.

I have some of those old question/answer with a song clip "interviews" on some old cassettes in my closet. One was called, I think, "Superfly Vs. Shaft." One of the questions was about Nixon meeting behind closed doors with John Shaft. "Mr. President, what are you and Shaft doing in there?" The answer (from Me and Mrs. Jones): "Holdin' haaands, makin' all kinds of plans ...")

I also remember one called "Mister Jaws."

I used to make "interview" tapes like that of my own ... I did two with Bill Cosby (using his old comedy albums for the answers) and one with DONNY OSMOND songs as answers.

I worked in the Cincinnati McGovern office and then ran the Flint Michigan office during the primaries . I still love George but after the Eagleton debacle it was all down hill . I still remember talking to some of the McGovern people whom I had met during the campaign who were working on the national staff during the General and how depressed everyone was as we went into election day . I hated losing that day . We knew how bad Nixon was and he went ahead and proved it to the whole world . As bad as he was , W is 10 times worse . It's hard to believe that is possible but it's true .
