I know the next election isn't until Aug. 31.

But for all practical purposes, Election Day comes at noon today for the majority of state House and Senate candidates.

The reason is simple: Despite the fact that Democrats and Republicans are just about evenly matched in terms of registered voters, legislative districts have been drawn to eliminate the competition.

That means, as the noon deadline for candidates to file for elected office comes and goes, many legislative candidates will get the state's version of Ed McMahon, pitchman for Publisher's Clearinghouse: "You may have already won!"

when Democrats are in charge and do this, it's called 'gerrymandering,' and it's scorned. This, by the way -- for anybody who wonders why so many Republicans hold office in Ohio, since it's 50/50 like Florida -- is the reason Ohio is the way it is. And once they get in charge, they go out of their way to redistrict so Democratic votes are diluted as much as possible.

The Banana Republicans will continue to strike in any state they can get enough pull to do this crap. Once they get hold of a state, forget it -- they don't play fair, but they expect Dems to play fair when they do it.
