Democratic vs. Republican strongholds. |
|
I was told that in the distant past, the south was a Democratic stronghold and the midwest and northeast were Republican strongholds. Now everything has changed. I know that Nixon had the Southern Strategy, but when were the midwest and northeast Republican strongholds? Did they used to be more conservative?

4. the parties changed more than the regions did |

Minnesota used to actually be a very very Republican state. But when FDR came, all the union workers and farmers started to vote Democratic, and of course the party merged and became the DFL. Then of course the GOP turned to the wacko right. It's pretty similar in the rest of the Midwest.
