Bush told the Amish that God speaks through him
Edited on Fri Jul-16-04 10:00 PM by party_line
Last Friday, Bush had a rather impromptu meeting with a group of Amish in Lancaster, PA. From the article:

"At the end of the session, Bush reportedly told the group, “I trust God speaks through me. Without that, I couldn’t do my job.’’

(eeeee-z registration)
http://lancasteronline.com/pages/news/local/4/7564

Does this fit the doctine of any faith or sect? Is it Pentecostal? The closest (in my understanding, from memories of my youth) that Baptist dogma would get, is to be open to letting God's love flow through you to others.

What religion believes that God speaks through the president?

edit to add snip>
Bush had tears in his eyes when he replied. He said the president needs their prayers. He also said that having a strong belief in God is the only way he can do his job.

This story has not been reported before. You might think an observant press follows the president everywhere, especially during a re-election campaign, but no reporter attended this meeting.

Sam Stoltzfus, an Old Order historian and writer who lives in Gordonville, spoke with a number of people present at the session with the president.

He related what happened to the Scribbler, saying the Amish “caught Bush’s heart.’’

The 20-minute meeting with Bush occurred immediately after the president addressed a select audience at Lapp Electric Service in Smoketown Friday afternoon.

I have no clue why any presidential candidate would court the Amish vote, of all people. They don't participate in most governmental activities, including voting. He is a blasphemer for declaring that God speaks through him. I bet that didn't go over too well with the Amish, like it matters anyway. Shrub's desperation is showing.

84. Maybe no press and no photo op is because the folks
protecting * and his campaign staff were in a panic because he was cracking up so they took him to a group of folks that they know do not vote and will not publicize his whacked out moment of religious fervor. They wanted a group he could talk to and confess to that were innocuous. They saw him slipping into his crazy "chosen one" persona and to try to salvage what little bit of emotional stability he has left, they purposely allowed him to communicate with other holy folks.

* is losing his mind and they know it.

82. The Amish are
staunch supporters of the ten commandments. "You shall not make for yourself an idol.." speaks to me in this instance.

The Amish make facelss dolls and do not allow their pictures taken (at least MOST of them) in accordance to this commandment. I can see Bush's statement that God speaks to him fall into this category.

I can't imagine the Amish taking this statement lightly, though will probably dismiss it as "something the English do".

33. Jeebus H. Christmas!
I think he is genuinely deragned. He has no contact with reality.

So let's take a look at our friend in need, the 20th Amendment to the United States Constitution.

There are two ways that an incapable president can be removed: one is voluntary:

Amendment XXV, Section 3. Whenever the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that he is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, and until he transmits to them a written declaration to the contrary, such powers and duties shall be discharged by the Vice President as Acting President.

The other involuntary.

Section 4. Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.

Two things to note: 1. this requires the agreement of the Vice President and, 2. either a majority of the Principals or a majority of some Congressionally-created body.

However, the President can fight back, which throws the question into Congress:

Thereafter, when the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that no inability exists, he shall resume the powers and duties of his office unless the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive department or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit within four days to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office. Thereupon Congress shall decide the issue, assembling within forty-eight hours for that purpose if not in session. If the Congress, within twenty-one days after receipt of the latter written declaration, or, if Congress is not in session, within twenty-one days after Congress is required to assemble, determines by two-thirds vote of both Houses that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall continue to discharge the same as Acting President; otherwise, the President shall resume the powers and duties of his office.

A two-thirds majority is required to remove the President in that case.

34. The article made me LAUGH
They told him they don't vote but they'd offer him their prayers. This moved him to tears, but that ain't necessarily a compliment coming from religious people, I know.

Then there's this:

When the Amish were “found not to be a serious threat to national security,’’ they were allowed inside the office area of Lapp Electric and waited about 30 minutes for the president to appear.

“Babies got restless. Children squirmed,’’ Stoltzfus reports. “Suddenly the president and five Secret Service men stepped into the room. One housewife said, ‘Are you George Bush?’’’

Ok when the AMISH were found not to be a serious threat to national security??? LOL! And the one woman didn't know who he was (of course, no TVs), but I found that funny.

"Bush said he had never met any Amish before and was curious about why the men were wearing straw hats rather than black wool hats. The Amish explained that they wear cooler straw in summer. Bush tried on a hat."

Why can I just SEE this in my head? And dang if there were only photos of that moment. It'd be another great one just begging for a caption, wouldn't it?

The dude is SO like desperate. Amish. I love 'em, I respect 'em, but Georgie, they DON'T VOTE.

37. Oh and on the question of God speaking through him
I consider myself to be a Christian, but no particular denomination. I don't attend church. I have also studied Buddhism and Hinduism (not formally but for many years) and I know that when anyone says God speaks through them, I am immediately suspicious and think it is very arrogant to presume something like that.

And if you look at the Bible, you will see numerous instances of God speaking not through the rich and powerful but through the smallest and weakest in the world. Whether your God is Allah, Buddha (I know, not technically considered a God), Ra, etc.

What a dork.

Evangelicals. Who, BTW,don't rule out that God "speaks" through other Christians. Typical dry drunk arrogance and attitude. Lost in the neverland of, "I'm George Bush and ain't I sumthing"

I suspect that Georgie is trying to cummune with his lessers, the American public. He can say he is touched and has been touched by all Americans.(barf) But more importantly--visiting the Amish who are pacifists means no military families with sons or daughters in Iraq or Afghanistan to stir the turd.

What a major bullshitter, like anyone and everyone in the country doesn't know that farmers such as the Amish wear straw hats in the summer. Fucking moron.

George believes that his election is a done deal. His oil buddies will make it happen.

73. He was listening to Black Sabbath on 78 speed again!
Had a BAD flashback? Nutin' to see there, move on for Heaven's snakes! And the Chimp has his primate finger on the big red button of the Mother Of All Terrible Swift Swords too! I wonder if Shrub was teaching the Amish how to line dance while he was bumming? Shrub wanted all their Amish butter to butter up people at the fund raisers I'll bet!

Out of all the people Gawd could talk to, why would Gawd pick a self centered fool like that?

79. For those asking about Bush's obscene gesture on same day...
After doing his little campaign stops and being a total phony in front of the Amish ...

He rolled through ULTRA-CONSERVATIVE Lancaster County, saw a bunch of protesters, and flipped the bird at them, according to three teen-age protesters (who have been featured on Air America's Al Franken Show).

Here's the description (and a fuzzy picture) of that event:

http://www.livejournal.com/users/jiveturky/185733.html

For information on other protesters ARRESTED in Lancaster (for those who haven't heard about the Smoketown 6 (thong-wearing, Abu-Ghraib prison pyramid re-enactors -- most clever protest of the millennium so far, I think) ... and the guy who mooned Bush ...)

Here's that link (in the local CONSERVATIVE paper, if you can believe it!):

85. One more reason to put YAWEH on the ballot in November
I've been saying for awhile that Bush shouldn't run in November but, instead, the GOP should put Yahweh on the ballot. This way, the American people know what they are getting. Now with Bush admitting he is the human equivalant of a ventriloquist's dummy, shouldn't we get to vote or not vote for the hand controlling the puppet?
