Media echoes Right Wing Talking Points. Why is Jon Stewart (Daily Show) |
|
Edited on Fri Jul-16-04 10:26 PM by Mayberry Machiavelli
the ONLY one exposing this in the most effective way possible? By making montages showing the various perps (McLellan, Condi, Rummy, Cheney, shrubya, various media whores) repeating some RW talking point, with identical phraseology, edited in rapid succession.
I mean, it would be sweet if when one of these media bozos dared to appear to be interviewed themselves, they were confronted by such a montage clip, and asked "where do you guys get this material from, anyway?"
I really think it should be a regular feature of some prime time show, sounds like Stewart is already building it into a regular feature on his excellent show (I rarely get to watch it because the wife usually wants to watch Animal Planet or Stern's show on E! or something).
If Michael Moore had TV Nation again, this kind of thing would be child's play for him.
AAR could perhaps make a regular feature of this on Franken's show perhaps, "the daily/weekly talking points" or something. With audio clips of course. Even Howard Stern could do something like this.
Thoughts?

And get Janine on there as well.
I LOVED when he went to all those corporate headquarters to challenge CEOs to basic tasks. Bill Gates was challenged to format a floppy disk but denied the challenge.
The ONLY CEO who accepted was the Ford CEO who successfully changed the oil on a Ford Taurus.

31. That was a great show. |

I liked the one when he went to Kuwait after the Gulf War and asked them if they had democracy yet.
Also the one where he explored what it would take to get your neighbors to get suspicious about you being an axe murderer instead of the usual "He kept to himself. We had no idea." So he played taped loud screams, stood in the window stabbing a dummy in silhouette, poured a red blood-like substance down the driveway, dug up his backyard and buried barrels, etc. No one said a peep. Classic.

3. does anyone remember the meme |
|
from during the recount? a little phrase that they all sang. it was the first time that i recall seeing this kind of thing in action. baker started it, and in a day or 2 they had bubba on the street interviews where they were parroting it back. i do not remember what it was, but i was just dumbstruck that something so riduculous would be picked up like that. been racking my brain for a while to remember. anybody?

The votes have been counted and recounted and recounted again. They hadn't been, of course, but it sure was catchy.

18. The drum beat was that Gore was trying to "change the rules" about how |
|
the votes were counted and it was "unfair" to want to count votes with indentations rather than hanging chads. Or something like that.

I nearly broke my TV when every talking head let Baker get away with saying this over and over and over as if it made a shred of sense.

4. It has been a long held belief of mine that Stewart will become |
|
an important political figure. You have already began to notice that his humor is evolving into a more cutting force. The cast is also going after the idiots in media and culture, but Jon's humor is taking on a more sarcastic edge. He will make a very big difference in the media and in politics this year. The birth of his son seems to have stirred him in a way that is quite remarkable.

9. Not only are the talking points identical |
|
They are usually broadcast by the ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX networks at the same moment. To prove they are reported within seconds of one another no matter what network, you need only to surf back and forth.

Especially now that F9/11 has called the mainstream media on the carpet. That clip should be on his website so the whole world can see it. And we're supposed to believe that they're NOT taking their orders directly from the White House?

10. Mikey, turned the tables on an NBC |
|
reporter,Heather or Hannah, I forget. It was masterful. I only read the transcript- It was linked here at DU, but I can imagine that she was trying to hide under the furniture. He demanded to know why he had to do the news people's job asking the right questions and why the news people just beat the drums of war instead of objectively looking at the facts. She must've been devestated because Mike backed off a bit and assured her that he wasn't directing his rant at her but the media.

is really a national treasure.
there are literally dozens of clips from his show that manage to expose right wing in a way that the rest of the media is just not able to, and it is really the kind of thing that needs to be made into nationwide commercials by, say, someone like moveon.org

When the fake news has far more truth in it than the "real" news.
I remember watching the Daily Show when it first came on. They were trying to do an SNL style program where everything was fiction. However, the style of moking real news coverage is a LOT funnier.
BTW, Craig Kilgourne is an asshole.

...Keith Olbermann had a great segment on his old show. The screen was split into nine cubes, and in each cube was a pundit. Coulter, John Fund, Kelly Ann Fitzpatrick, Barbara Olson, etc. All of them were yammering at the same time. It was just great. Such tools they are.

That other conservatives, especially those with dissenting views from the admin, are never given any coverage.
Basically, he says, Fox is the Bush Broadcasting Network.

25. Ugh, four years of the same crap |
|
Fearless Leader and his administration seem to me to have a whole media handling system in place, as follows:
1. Interviewer/Investigator asks seemingly direct and/or penetrating question.
2. Administration Official/Pundit locks on to one or two "key words" from question, rifles through "mental filing cabinet" until categorically appropriate response is selected.
3. Administration Official/Pundit launches into long, precisely worded but ultimately meaningless response that is not closely related to question and offers no real insight, but which casts administration actions in a positive light and is hopefully delivered in a voice sage enough to fool the huddled masses.
4. Repeat steps 1-3 as necessary.
5. Cut to thirty minute medical news highlighting latest pharmaceutical breakthrough.

30. Luntz BRAGS about this. They focus test their talking points on the |
|
dim witted, semi-informed masses and pick the most effective phrases and "arguments."
Then they all get the same marching orders and repeat these talking points like they were mantras.
When we say "single payer heathcare" nobody knows what the hell we are talking about.
When they say "tax relief" and "death tax" and "war on terror" and "better to fight them there than here" the phrasings themselves don't allow for effective counter-arguments.
