Edwards Courts Hispanic Voters in Calif.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards on Friday courted Hispanics, the nation's fastest growing minority population, offering a larger "piece of the American Dream" if John Kerry is elected.

"I believe in building up our great middle class - especially the millions of Hispanic Americans who are working hard and still struggling to get ahead," Edwards said in remarks prepared for a Hispanic get-out-the-vote organization.

"Your values are the values that built America: strong families, deep faith, and closely knit communities," Edwards said.

Both parties are actively courting Hispanics, an important voting bloc in the upcoming presidential election, especially in southwestern battleground states.

1. I believe
that Edwards will be very popular with Hispanic voters in California. His optimistic outlook and working class roots will play well, not to mention the fact that Kerry/Edwards are right on all the issues that affect Hispanic voters!

2. They may have trouble with Hispanic Catholics who vote
according to their beliefs that abortion is wrong. We may need to write that segment of the group off.

3. I think Kerry-Edwards need give no ground on values and religion.
Catholics vote Dem 52:48 IIRC, and Latino Dems better than that, IIRC (58%?).

No need to write them off, especially with this ticket.

5. RIGHT
i live in southern california and i know some who are anti choice, but will still vote democratic because of economic issues.

actually the same can be said about all voters. we have a chance of getting those who disagree with us on social issues to vote for us on economic issues. i think clinton did that which is how he won. and it's the same advice clinton gave to kerry on running his own campaign this year.

4. I live in a very heavily
Hispanic (Mexican) populated area. They vote Democratic almost exclusively regardless of the abortion issue. Writing them off would be ridiculous, but I do think that Spanish language ads to counter any Spanish ads done by * are necessary. Who knows what falsehoods * is telling in his ads, and we need to remind non-English speaking Hispanic voters of the truth.

6. He needs to get the hispanics in Florida and Arizona
and even Texas. And the hispanic populations in the South are growing quickly as well. They may tip the scales in Virginia, Arkansas, Tennesee, and North Carolina.

KerryEdwards need to make it very clear that what they are offering is the real deal and what Bush is offering is labor exploitation covered by smoke and mirrors.

7. If one of Teresa's languages is Spanish, they need to send her out
and speak to them in fluent Sapnish...not the "pidgin Spanglish" that * tries to speak.

8. For every action, there is a reaction...
The polls show overwhelming majorities of Americans opposed to illegal immigration.

After Kerry addressed the subject of illegals, the polls in Arizona showed Bush widening his lead. Arizona has a ballot initiative in Nov related to benefits & that will bring out many anti-immigration types.

Perhaps an Arizona DUer can address this subject with better info than I have.

Outreach to Hispanics is fine, but the subject of illegals is explosive.

10. Pentecostals have a major mission emphasis in the Hispanic
community

Pentecostal churches preach anti-abortion and anti-homosexuality and that 'christians' have only one moral voting option.....republican

Pentecostal churches are also a major presence in the black community
