USA writes off Pak debt

The USA today wrote off nearly half-a-billion dollar debt owed by Pakistan under an agreement signed between the two countries, a day after Mr Richard Armitage visited Islamabad to discuss, among other things, Pakistan’s chances of sending troops to Iraq.
The agreement to write off the $495.3 million debt was signed here by US Ambassador to Pakistan Ms Nancy Powell and Secretary of Pakistan Economic Division Mr Waqar Masood Khan, taking the total debt cancellation during the past two years to $1.5 billion.
Mr Powell appreciated Pakistan’s economic policies initiated during the past five years and said the write-off marked a continuation of the US partnership with Pakistan. “Our continued commitment to Pakistan is a vote of confidence in the economic stewardship of the Pakistani government and the intelligence, energy and resourcefulness of the Pakistani people,” she said.

2. Why waste time? Congress will rubberstamp anything Bush* wants.
He is actually being very considerate by avoiding them having to discuss it and not dedicate their time to important things like denying US citizens their rights in every area possible.

5. Never heard of the deficit, has he?
Mind you. I am all for x-ing out the debt of developing countries in the case of the IMF and World Bank, but when * okays something like this I feel very leery and have to wonder what the true motive is.

July Surprise

A third source, an official who works under ISI's director, Lieutenant General Ehsan ul-Haq, informed tnr that the Pakistanis "have been told at every level that apprehension or killing of HVTs before election is absolute must." What's more, this source claims that Bush administration officials have told their Pakistani counterparts they have a date in mind for announcing this achievement: "The last ten days of July deadline has been given repeatedly by visitors to Islamabad and during meetings in Washington." Says McCormack: "I'm aware of no such comment." But according to this ISI official, a White House aide told ul-Haq last spring that "it would be best if the arrest or killing of HVT were announced on twenty-six, twenty-seven, or twenty-eight July"--the first three days of the Democratic National Convention in Boston.

10. More on Pakistani debt
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/3158456/

Oct.24, 2003

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Pakistan said Monday it plans to repay $1.08 billion of its debt to the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank ahead of schedule to free up money for social programs.

Pakistan’s Foreign Exchange reserves surged to an all-time high of more than $11 billion after the country joined the U.S.-led coalition against terror in 2001. Its alliance with Washington triggered a surge in foreign aid and debt rescheduling by Western nations.

11. Is this the pay-off for Pakistan's role in 911?
In May 2001 the U.S. State Department met with Iran, German and Italian officials to discuss Afghanistan. It was decided that the ruling Taliban would be toppled and a "broad-based government" would control the country so a gas pipeline could be built there.

Even as plans were being made to remove the Taliban rulers from power, Colin Powell announced a $43 million "gift" to Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy in the UAE received a call that Bin Laden supporters were in the U.S. planning attacks with explosives. It was rumored that Bin Laden was interested in hijacking U.S. aircraft.

In June 2001 the decades-old procedure for a quick response by the nation’s air defense was changed. NORAD’s military commanders could no longer issue the command to launch fighter jets because approval had to be sought from the civilian Defense Secretary, Donald Rumsfeld.

In July 2001, the private plot formulated in May for toppling the Taliban was divulged during the G8 summit in Genoa, Italy. Immediately after the conference, American, Russian, German and Pakistani officials secretly met in Berlin to finalize the strategy for military strikes against the Taliban, scheduled to begin before mid-October 2001

In September 2001 the "catastrophic and catalyzing" modern-day Pearl Harbor envisioned years earlier by the White House members of the PNAC came to pass when the WTC and Pentagon were attacked with U.S. aircraft as Rumsfeld sat passive and unresponsive. Immediately, the finger of blame was pointed at Osama bin Laden, a former CIA operative with ties to Afghanistan. Suddenly, the U.S. "gift" of $43 million to the Taliban in May was cast in a new light. Coincidentally, Pakistan had participated in the plan to attack Afghanistan and the chief of Pakistan's Inter Service Intelligence agency was later linked to a 911 hijacker after wiring him $100,00 just days before the WTC fell.

In October 2001, with flags waving, crowds cheering, and anthems playing, the "War On Terror" and the hunt for Osama began when Afghanistan was attacked right on schedule of July's secret meeting

Shorrtly afterwards, public focus was diverted to Iraq. You already know the rest of the story.
