Latest NYT/CBS Poll Numbers: ALL BAD FOR BUSH!
Edited on Sat Jul-17-04 08:04 PM by Beetwasher
But you wouldn't know that from the headline.

Public Likes Edwards, but Race Is Still Close

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/07/17/politics/campaign/17poll.html?hp

Highlights from way down in the article:

--snip--

The poll found that 45 percent of those surveyed approved of the job Mr. Bush is doing. That was up slightly from a May poll by CBS News, when it stood at 41 percent, but it was still below where it stood at the beginning of the year and below the level generally considered safe for an incumbent seeking re-election. Forty-eight percent disapproved of the job Mr. Bush is doing.

Mr. Bush's approval rating on foreign policy stood at 39 percent, about where it has been for the last three months. Fifty-five percent of respondents disapproved of the way he is handling foreign policy.

My comment: This number is beyond abyssmal.

On Mr. Bush's handling of Iraq, 37 percent approved and 58 percent disapproved,:wow: figures that were little changed from polls in May and June, before the Iraqis were granted self-governance on June 28. But the president got higher marks for the effort to combat terrorism, with 51 percent expressing approval of the job he is doing. And a sharp increase this year in the number of people who said things were going badly in Iraq appears to have leveled off, with 56 percent saying things are going somewhat or very badly, down from 60 percent this spring.

Signs that the economy has strengthened have helped Mr. Bush's standing somewhat since the winter, but his approval ratings on his handling of the economy still remain relatively low. Forty-two percent of those surveyed approved of his handling of the economy, and 51 percent disapproved.

--snip--

His only positive was terrorism and let me say this about that number. 51% is not too good, especially when you consider the hope factor. People serious want him to succeed at this fighting terror thing, and since there hasn't been an attack here since 9/11 they are still giving him that benefit and HOPING he is doing a good job. 51% blows for this number considering the emotional headstart he's getting from people.

1. I read the NYT, but it baffles me
On one page they editorialize an apology for not being more vigilant on their Iraq war reporting; then they come out with a poll with is GOOD for K/E but headline it so you won't think so. AAAAHHHHH! (THAT'S ME SCREAMING)

2. Horse race still close KE 49% BC 44% or KE 45% BC 42% NC 5%
Pretty much confirms the Edwards bounce found in the latest Gallup poll.

Nader-Camejo will never get anywhere close to 5%.

We should be up by around 10% by the time the convention is over.

Overall, good news.

4. I personally think it will probably make the race even again.
And then barring what I consider the small possibility one candidate pulling away after the debates as happened in 1980, polls should be tight until the election, within MoE and basically useless.

5. let's get one thing straight about terror attacks here since 911
there have been quite a few

don't forget the anthax and ricin attacks

how many different instances; how many deaths

media've been real good at letting the pug talking points bury those, haven't they

so have the dems, for that matter

Ricin? Do you mean the foiled plot?

To be honest, I think the plane that went down in Queens soon after 9/11 was probably a terror attack too....

7. 'Good on terror' means...
Edited on Sat Jul-17-04 11:09 PM by Davis_X_Machina
...'will nuke the Godless till they glow'.

Kerry doesn't need or want to lead on this one.

Bush said Iraq is the 'central front on the war on terror'.

But Bush is doing a bad job in Iraq, which ought to mean a bad job on terror.

So either folks dont' believe that Iraq is the 'central front on the war on terror' or 'terror' must mean 'something other than Iraq', to explain these results.

They're seeing through the lies... not all the way through, not yet, but it's started.

8. It appears the poll was before Ridges warnings about another
terrorist attack. I wonder what the admin's new concerns about an attack will do for his ratings in the next poll. (???)
