8. I have two children
am $30K in debt to the government for my education, have about $800 to my name. Rent is due in two weeks. And I just lost my job Thursday (because of an end of contract).

Don't get me wrong, I'm living just fine!

and I'm doing great by most standards (a non-college degreed individual who happened, by sheer force of will, many years of shit wages and a lot of luck, to become a writer for a corporation that actually treats its employees right).

17. I'm a "have enough to know that what the have's mostly have is luck"
All those rich republicans really just have luck on their side. Sure, they work hard, but we all know that the lower classes work harder. The vast majority were either born into wealth, born into a situation where they could become educated and then acquire wealth, or lucked out by being in the right place at the right time.

I can say this because I was born into a family that was not rich, but had enough to allow me to go to an elite college, then med school, which allowed me to meet my partner, another doctor, thus making us comfortable. But how different it would have been if I was born into another situation, a third world country, migrant farm workers, or the like.

There is no way someone should be able to benefit from a society like ours and not feel beholden to it. IMO, people who don’t are just plain selfish.

29. Bingo--great explanation!
My husband doesn't understand why I want to spend our money helping others, especially since right now he's earning and I'm rearing.

And my answer is "Because we can."

Yeah, we've worked hard all our lives to get a secure life. We have everything we NEED, and a bunch of junk we WANT, and life is good. I mean, a decent house, medical care, and an internet connection? I'm in the top 1% of the freakin' world, and nowhere near being a millionaire. Through a sheer accident of geography I landed in the "elite" class. Anyone who is not humbled by that knowledge or desirous of helping others is, indeed, selfish.

I am more than happy not keeping up with the Jones' jacuzzi and diamond tennis bracelet. I couldn't enjoy them knowing that people bathe in rivers that are also used as sewers. Anyone can label this "liberal guilt" if they wish. I prefer to call it simple gratitude for having a blessed life. You'd think Bush and his "Christian" followers would get that; but you'd be wrong.

24. A Have Not
We (my son and SO) live on $1000 per month. We have CHIPs for my son. We live on $200 per month for groceries. I shop at the 2nd hand shops for clothes, most of the time. If my SO did not own an ISP, we would not be able to afford internet. If my SO's dad did not own the building, our rent alone would make us homeless. No Health insurance for me or SO. He has not had a vacation in 3 years. I stay at home because child care and transportation would eat us up. We don't have a vehicle, and there's not public transportation. It costs me $20 to get to my son's school for conferences, etc.

31. My needs are simple. I have more than I need
and the excess goes to help those who have less than I. (I was in the Peace Corps before graduate school, so I am used to getting by on less than many Americans.) I do not like consuming more than my share and so I try my very best to live as simply as possible.

(for example, I bike or ride the bus for transportation. )
