the cheap theatre. I enjoyed it. I was afraid I was going to be totally scared. I get scared at scary movies. I only jumped out of my seat once and I closed my eyes when the guy cut his rope and fell into the ship.

Although I know it was exaggerated, the essence of truth is there, even if in speeded up time. I like the little romance story in there. The wolves had me on the edge of my seat and eyes averted.....

I liked that the homeless guy was the one who give them all pointers and that he was the one who listened to stay in the library. He was the smart one of the bunch....

Burning books to stay warm....when the guy said....come on down here we have a whole shelf of tax law....everyone laughed.....it was full for a saturday afternoon....

$2 dollars, could have waited until Tuesday and gone for 1.25 but I splurged....and it is one of those where you eat there too....so they get your money anyway....although I have gone and not eaten too....

But it was good, I was afraid I might have night mares... but it was ok.

1. Here's irony for you

I've been pimping that movie since last year -- climate change has been one of those topics I've been paying attention to since the 1970s. So, you'd think I would have been at the theater on May 28th.

Nope.

I've been busy taking care of two sick family members. Haven't seen it yet.

Maybe tomorrow night -- only 3 theaters in my area (Philly) are still playing it, and Tuesday is the day the new releases come out.

8. But they're tuning in now

A lot of scientists are getting really and truly freaked out.

First, the natural processes they were describing -- such as the Greenland thaw -- have not just sped up, but the speed itself has sped up. The feedback loop is far more powerful than anyone suspected.

Second, it is starting to look like a cosmic phenomenon. Every planet beyond Earth has been observed to be experiencing some kind of "planetary warming". The fact that we're immersed in a tenuous cloud of dust isn't helping any. Now, the race is on to determine whether it is kicking up the solar activity we've been seeing.

Third, the Earth is in the middle of a truly frightening die-off. Even the honeybees are threatened with extinction. Nothing like it has ever been seen in geology and/or paleontology, and it didn't even take a major impactor this time.

The worst part of this for the scientists is that there is no one they can confide their anxieties to. The so-called "skeptical" movement has so saturated the scientific world that merely copping to a case of heartburn can lead to a severe "debunking". Wallace Broecker, one of the main scientists behind the studies of ice age dynamics, has taken to talking like a politician when he's asked for an opinion. I have no doubt that when The Day After Tomorrow opened, climatologists were lined up in their local drugstores to buy plenty of Imodium and Pepcid AC.

The stuff of sci-fi is actually happening, and we're still playing footsie over whether it's man-made or natural, over whether Occam's Razor has been used and how best to get those grant funds for fiscal 2005.

Well, I ranted long and loud last night over the problems we'll also face with the end of cheap oil. I look at it as all of a piece -- our societies simply don't know how to plan for the future and our "leaders'" are motivated by power and profit and nothing else.

Planetary changes (sorry, I don't have links right now, and am too tired to want to look for them!):

Mars -- Mars has warmed up considerably since the middle 1970s. Originally reported by a single team, several researchers have corroborated the conclusions. Running water has been detected on the surface of the planet as early as 1980.

Jupiter -- Increase in atmospheric activity, local wind speeds, presence of new features, increased cloud top temperature (still controversial). Moon Io has become very volcanically active.

Saturn -- Aurorae are now visible from modest sized Earth-based telescopes. Similar atmospheric changes to Jupiter have also been seen.

Uranus -- Aurorae detected; increased cloud top temperature.

Neptune -- Substantial increase in albedo (approx. 50%) since 1980. Many indirect signs of atmospheric heating; conclusions still controversial but being studied.

Pluto -- Although Pluto is again on the outbound leg of its orbit, there is conclusive evidence that its atmosphere is still in its gaseous phase and has not refrozen, as it was expected to do.

That's it in a nutshell. I wouldn't use the info to try to get into a pissing contest with any astronomers, but it's a summary of some of the action going on today.

Naturally, I would be quite happy if it's the normal state of things and I'm over-reacting.
