Though I always realized Bushco was a bit of an Orwellian nightmare, I didn't realize JUST how much until I re-read the book.
In my earlier reading I was more focused on the thought-control aspects of the story.
This time around I was taken by the never-ending war scenario, since it's so much the case of the never-ending "war on terror". Bushco has actually done Orwell one better - rather than a never ending war with equally advantaged opponents have a war on a CONCEPT. Impossible to win, impossible to end.
Between that and the revision of history and the thoughtpolice, I can't help but think even Orwell would be a bit shocked at how quickly and overtly his vision is becoming reality.

7. The 1984 society is ultimately doomed to failure |

either from resource depletion or lack of innovation. If all the wars are fake then the ability to power the propaganda press, the TV factories and the various ministries will expire. In order to survive Eurasia would actually have to fight Oceania to survive. Doublespeak and all the other Orwellian themes would have to disappear in order for any of the three big powers to survive.
The lack of societal progress either towards enlightenment or collapse is the most depressing aspect of the novel because it underscores the hopelessness and inability of the individual to have any meaningful impact on the world around him.

Supporters use doublethink, the apathetic go to the "feelies" and take soma, and the rest of us slowly go nuts.
