STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
The Peace Park Project is dedicated to building a Peace Park in Asheville, NC, with a memorial showing the human costs of the Iraq War. Project members are working with Chapter 99 of Veterans for Peace to build and maintain the park.

American troop deaths have now passed 800, while the number of injured and maimed exceeds 5000; there is no end in sight. We intend to hasten the end of this war by drawing attention to the increasing number of our young people who are dying in a preemptive war of violence and aggression.

The final design will incorporate the names, ages, and hometowns of the American troops killed in Iraq. We invite local and national support and participation in making this park a reality.

WHY WE ARE BUILDING THIS WALL

Our young people are dying in Iraq at the rate of fourteen per week. There is a ban on photographing their coffins when they arrive at Dover AFB, and no high officials attend their funerals. Politicians will not note their deaths, fearing the inevitable public backlash.

We are taking note of their deaths by erecting a wall listing their names, ages, and hometowns. By doing so, we want to remind ourselves and the politicians of a most unpleasant fact: we are sacrificing the youth of our nation for an unnecessary, unjust and illegal invasion of a sovereign nation, based upon false intelligence claims and highly suspect motives.

The American public opposes this war, but US policy is determined by an Adminstration that came to power by thwarting democracy, and pursues an agenda beneficial to special interests but contrary to the public good.

Common practice is to wait until a war is over to take note of the dead. We won't wait. We intend to build this memorial now. With every death, we will add another stone. It is our hope that public outrage grows along with the wall.
