Halliburton Gets Subpoena Over Iran Ties
HOUSTON (Reuters) - Oil field services company Halliburton Co. said on Monday its Cayman Islands unit with operations in Iran had received a subpoena from a grand jury earlier this month.

"In July 2004, Halliburton received from an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Texas a grand jury subpoena requesting the production of documents. We intend to cooperate with the government's investigation," Halliburton said in a filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Any of you fellow DU'ers know what this might possibly be about? Know they are being investigated in France for African dealings, but I have not heard anything about their operations in Iran, didn't even know they had such.

2. Dem Senators had hearing about illegal business w/Iran when Cheney
Edited on Mon Jul-19-04 04:15 PM by wishlist
was still at Halliburton and Congress had made it illegal for U.S. companies to do business with Iran because it was considered a nation that supports terrorism. Halliburton got around the ban by forming a phony shell company in the Cayman Islands. The actual business dealings with Iran though were still being conducted out of the U.S. (Texas I guess) since there was no office or any personnel actually working in the Cayman Islands.

This is a huge potential scandal for Cheney that the Repubs in the Senate tried to squelch. I saw the fascinating hearing done by Democratic Senators that went on for hours earlier this year (I stayed up all night on a Friday night watching) with damning info about Halliburton's dealings with Iran plus all the war profiteering going on in Iraq. Sen Frank Lautenberg from N.J was especially vitriolic towards Cheney and Halliburton and he talked about this Cayman Islands sham.

3. Thanks for the scoop Wishlist
I have been following the ongoing thread (here on DU) about the Plame investigation and one of the theories is that she was outed because her work in the agency (WMD proliferation) was getting too close to potential Halliburton dealings with rogue nations concerning nuclear hardware. It is all incredibly odd how wherever Halliburton does business we are soon screaming about WMD and threatening regime change, and does lendcredence to this theory.

4. Cheney's traitorous ways may catch up with him yet-
This is making the nightly news tonight. I just heard CNBC talking about it (but they didn't explain that Cheney was CEO of Halliburton when the Iran deals were done and that the Cayman Islands 'unit' is allegedly a phony setup.) Maybe Lou Dobbs will delve into this a bit more tonight on CNN. Can't wait to see what develops with this story.

6. More background info can be found in this Feb 2004 article that I found.
I googled and couldn't come up with much. But this article came out in February 2004 probably about the time Sen. Frank Lautenberg conducted the Senate hearing that was shown on CSPan.

8. Guess the silly 'girlie men' remarks are deemed more newsworthy today
judging from the lack of coverage of this Halliburton story on the evening news. Of course, investigations and accusations against Halliburton have become routine.
